Indeed. And given the amount of fine detail work and drudgery involved, it would paint him in a different light than is typically perceived.

Some variety on the new album #gigaton says Stone, some really straight ahead rock songs and some spare and simple ballads. DOTC is ‘on the outer edge of something we’ve not tried before’. The album is ‘really us’.

So, it sounds like a Pearl Jam album with DotC as the outlier fwiw.

I think this is lending him too much creative/leadership credit in the mix room. Most likely, their mix engineer -- be it BOB, Evans, or whomever -- leads the charge, paints the picture, with Ed sitting by his side...

A good mix engineer knows how to take a band member's request and filter it through their creative lens. So when Ed says "I want to hear more of myself," a bad ME will simply bump up the vocal track, while a good ME will widen the spread, carve some frequencies out of another instrument, or otherwise create space for the vocal track without actually raising the volume of the vocal. The net result is Ed says "Cool, that worked." And hopefully Evans is thinking "Great, I just made the lead singer happy without making his vocal too loud."
 That's how I was picturing it going down, and assuming Stone's comment was simplified for the sake of brevity.

Interesting tidbit. As far as I'm aware, and I could well be wrong, Boom is pretty much nothing more than a touring member, he hasn't had any notable recorded contributions since Riot Act, so there's no reason to assume he wouldn't be, but I was listening to Marc Maron's pod with Josh Klinghoffer (recently binned Chili Pepper) today and he (Maron) mentioned that Klinghoffer would be doing some stuff on stage with PJ on this upcoming tour as well as opening.

Could just be a throwaway comment with zero truth in it, but if this was the case I can't see any need for a 4th guitarist onstage, and given that the guys album he's touring behind is basically piano/keyboard based songs, maybe there's something there. Perhaps I've just become a mad Pit conspiracy theorist.

this is exactly right. some smaller bands really emphasize this. a friend's band released a lead single in july - their album comes out on monday. they released one or two other singles since the first one. i asked him why he was dragging it out and he said it's all about remaining in the spotlight longer and gaining listens on spotify/apple music to help you get into the Discover section via their algorithms. it makes sense but feels strange.

They’ll need another guitarist when Jeff hits the keyboards and Stone the bass for DOTC.

It makes sense if he will already be there as an opener.

We also don't know what other songs on the album will require in terms of additional instruments. He's talented. I'd be ok with him popping in for some new tunes or for new arrangements of older stuff.

yep, and it's the right call. with s/t, bs, and lb and the various songs in between, he's too prevalent in the mix.
100% agree. i wondered if the lack of stone on the last record was more of he just didn't come with anything good enough (Let the Records play can attest to that theory) or was this a case of Ed controlling things too much.

Stone saying "'we're excited to go on tour and play these new songs, they're very playable"

very different than

Thom Yorke saying after making Kid A "i don't know how we're going to play this stuff live."

This album is not going to be a major departure as some of us thought after hearing Dance.

I'm surprised Of the Earth didn't make the cut, with the focus of the album title. Hopefully they keep playing it live.
