Straight ahead rockers? Severed Hand or Off the Earth or Insignificance are all straigh ahead rockers. driven by powerchords and a 4/4 beat.
In Stone's mind everything with powerchords and in 4/4 is probably a straight ahead rocker....

As far as I'm aware, and I could well be wrong, Boom is pretty much nothing more than a touring member, he hasn't had any notable recorded contributions since Riot Act, so there's no reason to assume he wouldn't be, but I was listening to Marc Maron's pod with Josh Klinghoffer (recently binned Chili Pepper) today and he (Maron) mentioned that Klinghoffer would be doing some stuff on stage with PJ on this upcoming tour as well as opening.
Could just be a throwaway comment with zero truth in it, but if this was the case I can't see any need for a 4th guitarist onstage, and given that the guys album he's touring behind is basically piano/keyboard based songs, maybe there's something there. Perhaps I've just become a mad Pit conspiracy theorist.
Could be something lost in translation but Maron’s comment does sound like Klinghoffer will be actually playing with the band in some capacity.

Indifference, Around the Bend, and All or None are sparse ballads the way I'm sure stone is using the song. Go, Brain of J, and Grievance are rockers. So is Supersonic, Can't Deny Me, and Getaway. The issue will be which one we get

Stone's comments have me worried. Though I'm not big on DotC (really disappointed on first listen, but after a few more times I'm whelmed), I do most enjoy the sound of them trying different stuff and getting out of their comfort zone.
But there's gonna be some "straight ahead rockers" reads like this is the most experimental the record gets and will be sort of a bait and switch. Please please please don't let Buckle Up be a generic (geriatric?) three-chord turd.

Yes I think the album won't be as 'experimental' as say No Code was. Having said that, seeing excitement from Jeff & Stone gives me hope that the music & production will be good. Also note how stone says 'we did it ourselves' which implies minimal input from Producer.
Also I think its good how he was implying they preferred to take years making a record because they wanted to take their time and get it good, instead of smash records out every 3-4 years.
from S/T to LB it was 7 years, and it's now been another 7 years since LB. So based on that logic I'm expecting an album thats at least as good as if you combine your best songs from S/T with the 6 best songs from BS & LB

I listened to Lighting Bolt at the gym today (AirPods) and then DOTC right after. Might sound obvious but I can’t believe what a shitty sounding record LB is. Everything is so thin and tinny. The tone of Mike’s solo on LTRP is so awful. Anyway, back to back DOTC sounds so much better. There’s actually mid and low range presence. I don’t think there’s much of the “room” sound so many have hoped for given the super-compressed drum sounds but literally every recorded element is superior to that of LB. That in itself is a big improvement.
Listening to LB at the gym sounds like the worst experience. I feel like I’d end up just standing in the free weights area, staring at myself in the mirror, pondering all of the mistakes I’ve made in my life.

well, i don't know what your thoughts on it are, but a couple friends and i agree that, for example, Infallible sounds much better live than on the record. maybe given the prickly relationship i have with DOTC illustrates why i personally feel that way but Infallible feels a bit heavier (not just guitar wise). it feels like it has a little more umph to it. to a lesser extent in the same way the modern live version of No Way does. so perhaps the more electronic centric songs on this record will find a more organic balance in the live setting. plus if Klinghoffer actually is going to chime in here or there we could see something quite interesting.
Who the fuck cares about the live setting? How many times do you see PJ live vs. how many times do you listen to the song on the album? How the hell does Infallible sound heavier than this song? Infallible sounds like a pansy ass motherfucker next to DOTC.
jesus christ. i was comparing Infallible studio to Infallible live - it sounds better live, like there's more life to it. it's got a sturdy, heft to it that's not on the recording. also, i listen to a live concert about 5x as much as i listen to the studio records. so i care a lot how it translates to the live show. this is a live band; i don't think anyone has ever successfully argued the other way around. there's a reason they've released every concert as an official bootleg for 19 years - because they're an incredible live band that people love to see where every song is elevated.
