HELSINKI (AP) — Disputing the US intelligence community, President Trump said at a press conference alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin Monday that “I don’t see any reason why” Russia would interfere in 2016 election.
Putin says the ‘‘so-called Russian interference’’ in the U.S. 2016 presidential election was brought up by Trump during their summit in Helsinki.
Speaking at a joint news conference, Putin said: ‘‘I had to repeat that the Russian state never interfered, and does not plan to interfere in internal American electoral process.’’
Trump called the special counsel’s probe of the Russian election meddling “a disaster for our country.”
Trump said of Putin: ‘‘He just said it’s not Russia. I will say this: I don’t see any reason why it would be.’’

I was thinking this weekend: What happens when Putin dies? As I understand it, his entire power base is that he knows everything about everyone and that's what keeps the oligarchs in line but if he's gone and they are no longer afraid of him...what happens?
Also what kind of power vacuum would that create?

I just can’t imagine a reasonable and unprejudiced worldview that doesn’t read all of this as terribly alarming.

Close your eyes and make a memory today, so that when your kids are in history class in ~15 years you can tell them where you were on the day of the Helsinki Summit. Do you think it'll be at the beginning or in the middle of a chapter?

Russia pre-Putin was basically a mob state, and while it was fucking bonkers in many ways (the party scene in Moscow when I was there was “end of the world” level orgiastic) it mostly appeared to be defined by extreme poverty and reflexive pride of culture.
