This rings true to me. Incredible write up. Thank you for capturing what many of us are feeling.

THe jump from ortofon red to blue for me was the most immediate improvement ive ever had in my audiophile life.

Totally worth it.

Im on the Ortofon 2mGold right now which im fine with and feel like ive reached the highest level before now needing to upgrade speakers

I’ll check that out. I’m currently in the room with Miles Davis while I take a brief break from PJ.

I have Red but have never replaced it. It’s probably like car tires right?

Daft Twat said it best. This isn't Pearl Jams best record, but it is the one i will listen to moving forward.

Red vs Blue seems very political

I’ll need you to convince my wife it’s okay to spend that much money on a needle. I’m already getting dirty looks at my RSD haul from today. :D

Edit: oh God, I just discovered the Bronze…

Ugh, yea, sorry, i have the bronze.

However, the jump from blue to bronze was not as exciting as the jump from red to blue. I promise.

Can you give an example of something you heard on the Biden needle that you didn’t hear in the Trump needle?

Great album. I'm really enjoying it as a whole. A logical extension of Gigaton in places, and pushing the boundaries in other areas.

It's funny, years ago I feared these guys splitting up and PJ being no more. Yet here we are, after 30 odd years and they're releasing music of this calibre. Life has been fucked in recent years, but there are still pleasant surprises like this that make the grind still worthwhile.

Depending on your speakers, I’d say there’s room to go before you resort to that upgrade. I’d suggest looking at the Sumiko Moonstone. It’s warmer than the Ortofon blue 2M in my opinion. I think it’s the best all around moving magnet cartridge. You need to upgrade your other components including speakers before making the move to a moving coil cartridge. Those are truly hifi but at that point it’s like playing a Gibson Custom Shop through a garbage amp unless you give them the soundstage potential to reveal themselves.

This album is fantastic by the way. Just wish it was given the treatment it deserves. Setting Sun might be the best song they’ve released since I don’t even know when and any comparison would be ridiculous if it wasn’t how I feel.

Lol.

i have a couple albums i put on to check these sorts of things. I generally reach for "Lost in a dream" by War on Drugs....

I cant give you specificis as to why i enjoyed the blue over the red....but....the sound just popped out immeditaely on the blue. Made me feel like i stepped into the audiohpile world rather than just having a turntable that spun records.

everything just sounded and felt more poingnant. My setup didnt change. Nothing but the cartridge.

It was totally worth it.

Everything since then is convincsing myself it was worh it. But that jump from stock, to red, to blue....super worth it.

Listen, if you experienced the aural pleasures of the Derpitron T-1000 Phasewave Galaxy Ultra Magenta, you wouldn't be able to shut up about it either.

In all seriousness, this satirical response makes a good point. Ultimately this album should be judged on the quality of the songs. One runs the risk of minimizing or even being unable to enjoy the main ingredient in the listening experience when sound quality becomes greater than song quality.

I also am a multi instrumentalist who can pretty much get around on anything with strings. For years (decades maybe) my understanding/technical ability of being able to play music overshadowed the live experience when attending concerts.

This is no way to live and experience art. Dark Matter’s songs are really really strong. Don’t get bogged down in the weeds.

I have the RT82 as well and have been debating that upgrade to the 2M Blue...

would any of you fancy turntable enthusiasts be interested in adopting an adult son who’s just north of 50?
