Based on comments and reviews I've read, this seems to be the most polarizing episode of the series. I personally loved it. Great action and very well directed. I was totally into it, especially when the action started.

I definitely see the point of view of those who thought it was blah. Not into that story line, didn't really move the plot, Kit Harrington, etc... I guess after last week I welcomed a turn your brain off action movie episode.

The show runners are really talking up next week's episode as the best thing they've ever done.

If they wish to cover the end of book 3, they have a lot of plot lines to cover. A lot. It might explain the extra time (66 minutes?).
It has the potential of actually being an incredible episode but I fear that some events will be left aside for the beginning of season 5.

yeah i actually think the show runners are confusing best thing with exciting things they got to do because after all they're fans themselves as well.

My problem with the last episode, and really with everything having to do with Jon Snow, the wall, and everything north of the wall (including the white walkers) is that we're essentially told that none of it matters. The entire series starts out with a white walker scene, suggesting to the non-book reader that these guys play a huge role in the series. We then learn a little bit about these guys, and you keep expecting something will eventually happen and it really never does.

We know that people south of the wall know about the white walkers. Stannis received a message specifically about them, and spared Davos because he needed him to help with the problem. But then he seemingly ignores it. We never hear about Stannis's plan to deal with white walkers, instead get a dose of him begging the Iron Bank for money to raise an army to attack King's Landing. Likewise, Tywin is aware of the white walkers, yet we never hear squat about them. Now, the story line may change dramatically next season. But up until now, the viewer is essentially told not to worry about them.

On the Jon Snow, wildlings, Castle Black front and how it relates to people's feelings toward the last episode, remember that it took the wildlings 9 episodes to essentially ransake 2 villages and attack Castle Black. All the while the stories involving King's Landing, Sansa, and Arya are moving relevatively swiftly along. We're then investing an entire hour into one episode where we're led to the edges of our seats, and we want a sense of accomplishment at the end of the episode after the fighting as stopped. And what do we learn? That none of it matters! Jon Snow says so when he says the wildlings will be back again that night. So aside from killing off some major players, we got nowhere with that episode.

To me, this is why I felt a little empty after the last episode.

Stannis the Mannis hopefully be seen next episode.

All valid points, but a symptom of the adaptation for television. The whole Jon/Ygritte storyline works much better in the books.

At certain points in the books readers were thinking the same things as Chris H. It's a symptom of having a million characters and story lines. Sometimes things get put on the back burner only to be brought back later. At some points its worse in the books, I mean you have an entire books with almost no mention of some of the most popular characters in the series.
