Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015)

I'm sorta dreading the prospect of 'another' film all about Jedi. They should bring it back to the idea of a group of people you care about, in an adventure story aspect. A whole new trilogy about some young jedi having to go against all the odds doesnt appeal to me.

Just so you know 3 MORE movies (not counting 7,8,9) are now officially coming too.

I actually agree, Dime. I think the Jedi are something that are better in smaller doses; something less explained. I love the idea of a Jedi presence, but not necessarily a Jedi focus.

Though, with Luke being one of the only Jedi left (right?) these movies -- at least Episode VII -- can't be TOO much about them. Maybe the idea of building the Jedi back up. I don't know.

Time to geek out: yeah, what I loved about the EU books that take place right after the end of Jedi (like the Truce at Bakura and The Courtship of Princess Leia) is that Luke was still the only Jedi in the universe, and the New Republic wasn't even really in power yet; sure, the Emperor and Vader were dead, but there were still lots of Imperial threats all over the galaxy, and these books were about the in-fighting of the amorphous group that wasn't really the New Republic yet. It was a nice reflection of the difference between constituting vs. constituted power, and while it worked well as a book...I think it'd make a horrible movie. Jumping forward 30 years puts us in a timeframe where it's totally possible that the remnants of the Empire have been crushed, and that Luke has set up a Jedi training school or whatever and there are little Jedi running around. So I'd be very (but pleasantly) surprised of the narrative of the news films began with anything besides "The New Republic is at peace...but something is about to smash it!"

One thing that I'm excited about is that this probably won't be a backstory-laden installment; so many revivals of old series (Spiderman, Batman, Star Trek, etc.) get front-loaded with "How did we get here???" and the SW prequel trilogy was basically one long backstroy that we already knew...I'm expecting this to be pretty new and fresh right out of the gate. A guy can dream, can't he?

I thought Thrawn was kinda cool.very different than Vader, and an alien, because apparently the Emperor was a racist which explains why there are so few alien imperials.

Those book plots sound fascinating to me. That's the kind of thing I'd love to see. But I do see your point about it being a dull movie. And I certainly don't expect this movie to reflect those elements.

And I hope you're right about the exposition. There is a tremendous opportunity to reflect Joseph Campbell and The Hero's Journey and the structure of A New Hope but with entirely new elements. We'll see where they drive this thing, but hopefully, it isn't too nostalgic and expository.

Read them! I was reading these things in like 5th and 6th grade and I blew through them at the pace of like one every other week; I'm reading synopses on Wikipedia right now and they're giving me Star-Boners. I'd suggest reading:

The Truce at Bakura
The Courtship of Princess Leia
Like the first 4 Rogue Squadron books
The Thrawn Trilogy

And in that order, since that's chronological. If you get that far and you're still interested, there are obviously others.

When we went out east on a road trip when i was like 22 my buddy was reading all of them while i did most of the driving. He'd talk about it a ton and I ended up spending about 2 weeks reading the when I got back.
