'It's Only Natural' has definitely been climbing the ranks. Also 'Bastards of Light' and 'The Great Apes'. There's a good number of bangers on this here record.

Giving this a listen now, enjoying it so far. I love the drums on 'Here Ever After'. I feel a little bummed though because now I can't help but imagine how amazing they'd sound with a real drummer like tree_ behind the kit.

smallest_oceans wrote:Now that I've lived with the album for a few days I concur it really is a grower. Now I love it. Favorites are in line with most here:
Black summer
Here ever after
Aquatic mouth dance
Great Apes
Whatchu thinking
White braids
One way traffic (another good outro)
The heavy wing
But it really is consistent. Not inclined to skip anything... yet.
I already rate it higher than BTW (that album is too inconsistent not to mention the mixing), maybe higher than SA, but that may diminish with time.
For context, SA is now a top three for me (along with BSSM and Californication), but at the time I found it derivative and didn't get into it for years later.
Lots of good jams and a great live sound. The lyrics are probably still what keeps it back - but I will admit it is on par for AK.
The time away from the band when John left is probably what makes me enjoy this so much. Just the fact that it exists.
If UL came out in 2011 after SA, I probably wouldn't have sought it out as quickly.
TLDR: John leaving was good for the band and set up anticipation for his return nicely/ absence makes the heart grow stronger.
Agree with just about every word of this.
Right on!
Enjoying the discussion and links here. Thanks.
Still listening to this a lot. Love the mixing.
Not the one and veronica are probably the only two tracks I skip.

They debuted Whatchu Thinkin´ at a surprise show in California, and also played Wet Sand, which i know is a fan favorite around here.

I like BTW and SA better than this one for sure, but it's good. Amazing considering their age. It's a little by the numbers in that most every element of this can be found on BTW and SA, but I don't think it is lazy or mailed in. Seems like a couple of vocal melodies and structures are different. The jamming at the end of aquatic mouth dance is one of my favorite RHCP moments. Veronica might be my fav.
