Sandy Hook is different because it was the result mental illness, not mal-intent. It can be dismissed as such by those prejudiced in favor of assault weapons.

I actually think this incident could be used to enact long overdue gun control. Look, we are not going to stop Islamic terrorism. We are not. There are simply too many of them. Even if only 0.1% of the Muslim population supported Salafist/Wahhabism/etc., we are still talking nearly 2 million people. The largest army ever created. Trump's bullshit "pause in immigration" will do nothing but stop innocent Muslim families from all over the world from getting the help we have a moral obligation to provide them. And the left is, as usual, far worse by executing Cirque Du Soleil level twisting of logic to pretend that the problem of modern terrorism isn't metastasized by elements of this religion because Patriarchy or anti-Colonialism or stopping the evil of 'white men saving brown women from brown men' (I wonder just how much oppression has Michel Foucault has unleashed on this planet). But back to guns. If we accept that we cannot stop these events from happening, then we must mitigate their effects and the best way to do that, since it is apparent no social/cultural solution is acceptable to all sides, is to ban high powered and even semi-automatic weapons and their ammunition from sale to the public. Yes, millions of the weapons will still exist, but by eliminating their commercial availability and through smart buy-back and destruction policies, we can reduce turn a 50 person massacre into a 5 person massacre. Which is not 0, but still a fuckload better than what we have today.

What these douchebag fucksticks don't seem to get is that they can only be REactive. The only way these gun-nut NRA psychos can "save lives" is after someone else already pulls a gun. Safety by guns is not a PROactive solution. It never has been.
