Gee, it's funny how Birth of the Nation was basically DOA when its director's sexual assault charges were unearthed but Affleck is going to be up for every major award. Can't think of any major difference between the two of them.

I appreciate boycotting a work of art if you feel the artist has done something to warrant that action on your part. I've done the same with others. I judge the Affleck case exactly the same as I judge the Nate Parker Case: They were both settled out of court, which means justice has been served.

As for Affleck specifically, I can say that on WTF last week we spoke about being sober for a few years now, and that apparently his father was a real bad alcoholic. And so when one of the two stories for which he was sued involves him assaulting a women while obviously drunk, I can say, "Ok, maybe there was a pattern of behavior brought on by his disease, and he's settled that from a legal standpoint, and has also gotten sober. So as an outsider looking in, he's off the hook on that particular case." Far more worrying to me is his on-set behavior, which just makes him sound like an asshole.

Someone brought up Woody Allen, and there again is a murky case. Yes, he obviously developed an attraction for his adopted daughter while she was in her teens. That is weird and fucked up. But let's give him the benefit of the doubt and say he didn't act until she was 18, which at least keeps him out of any legal trouble. And their enduring relationship ever since has to count for something, right? So yea, he's a creep, but maybe he didn't do anything illegal, in which case I can still watch his movies.

Roman Polanski is a good example of an alternate scenario: He very obviously did something illegal, and has spent the rest of his life avoiding any sort of legal action. But it's also not like he's still out drugging and having sex with underage girls; he likely learned his lesson on that one. So any boycott of his films would be an empty gesture.

I boycotted Donald Trump on SNL, and wrote a couple letters to the show and to NBC, because that felt like an opportunity to have an impact, and perhaps change the course of the artists' and distributor's actions. In none of the aforementioned cases do I see an opportunity for my dollars to have an impact on the artist, or the world at large. Which might make me a defeatist (blessing a behavior gives the world license to continue the behavior, etc.)

That's not to say I disbelieve it, either. I'm neutral. Seems like it could just as easily be either a horrific fact, or an outlandish fabrication nurtured by a scorned ex-wife and her sympathetic therapist.
