It's worth watching to see the cinematic equivalent of someone trying to carry a car full of groceries in one hand.

Saw Admission. Which was fine or whatever. Then I watched A Late Quartet. Which I really loved.

Definitely for the european arthouse crowd. But even so, it's in bad taste. Subverts all expectations. I wanted/expected a slow burning noir crime caper set in Bangkok in the vein of "Drive", but after I read reviews I had a feeling I wasn't going to get the kind of movie I expected. I didn't. I tried to meet the movie on its terms, but still no.

I'm sure Refn adores his filmmaking here, but I think it was a missed opportunity. It's too bad.

The Hurt Locker on BR. Totally love this movie.

better than drive for my taste. still I considered drive to be the worst thing refn has ever done. Anyway I enjoyed the film...

I feel like I've been in a rut recently, not a lot of great movies. It's hard to watch movies in the summer, too, because it gets dark so late and it's really noisy where I live when the windows are open. I kind of have to wait for a quiet night. I go to the movies, but not often enough. Anyway, some relatively recently viewed standouts:
Sanjuro- Kurosawa's sequel to Yojimbo.
Phantom Carriage- 1921 Swedish film about a bum who is the last person to die on New Years Eve, so he must drive the carriage of death for the next year, picking up souls.
A Man Escaped-Bresson
Ballad of Narayama- the one by Kinoshita, not Imamura, a kabuki-inspired tale about a town that takes it's elderly up to the top of a mountain and leaves them here. Great beginning and even better ending.
Kanal-Polish war movie takes place almost entirely in the sewer.

Of new movies, Mud and Melancholia stand out.

My heavens this movie was relentless on your nerves. I saw it based on the reveiws saying that it was made in the vein of the great ghost story movies of the 60s & 70s (no cheap jump out scares aloud), and man did it work. After it slowly builds and gets rolling it doesn't pull back. It was a work out. I suggest seeing it with a good crowd.

Kingdom of Heaven - Directors cut.

No idea why this movie got such mediocre reviews. It's a really great movie.

Just finished watching this one, and even if i agree with what you said, i did enjoyed this one a lot.
I wasnt expecting a noir crime movie, i was expecting this. A really violent, stylish, non sense movie. And it did delivers some good moments.

Kudos to that cop guy and Kristen Scott Thomas...they are great.

Don't get me wrong though, the movie really embellishes at times, but it's Hollywood, so...
But as a haunted house movie it's smart. It's hard to find movies that are smart with the subject matter.

Yeah those actors were great. I loved it as a mood piece, but I felt none of the poignancy I felt with "Drive".

And I might be talking out my ass with this one, but I kind of saw the Freudian relationship between Gosling & Thomas interesting. A kind of commentary about Generation Y millennials who find it hard to cut ties with parental dependency. Interesting ideas, I just didn't feel anything.

i saw something similar about their relationship...and the way Julian have sex, always with his hand...at the end with her mom dead he kinda does the same than with his girl...that was fucked up and interesting, the same with the cop chopping his arms.
