Yeah, Lightning Bolt, why the fuck is Sleeping By Myself on?

I'm still happy about SBM and that will only stop if the arrangement of it really sucks.

So I'm gathering that the key points I missed tonight were...

1. My Father's Son is about sucking on titties.

2. Johnny Guitar Watson penis will hereby be referred to as his "logical extension."

3. Something about a drummer.

4. Brendan O'Brien makes love to women while listening to albums he produced. Ed may or may not be listening on speaker phone while this happens.

That's everything, right?

That's seems like a fair and reasonable assessment.

Kinda sore that my Gordon Ramsay joke didn't get any laughs, tbh. It was pretty good.

I chuckled when I read it on twitter, if that makes you feel any better.

It's not your fault, Platy of the Pus. I think this thread is about to collapse into a black hole and all jokes will fail to escape its event horizon.

The more interesting question for me is what does he not like?
Sloooow response to this as I've been trying to look into it, but he didn't like the latest Muse album. Will try to find out some other recent albums that he hasn't rated.

Incidentally there's a caveat to the Q reviews editor rating LB amongst his favourite albums of the year. And it is this tweet: "Title track of the new Pearl Jam album is the best of all their worlds: hard, heavy, a ballad, lighter-waver, fire-starter, epic & intimate."

So those that were unimpressed by the Wrigley performance of Lightning Bolt probably won't put much stock in his opinion of the new album anyway...

This is a bit confusing, sinse the second half of his statement seems to describe many songs at once, and one would think he is talking about the whole album, but then you look at "title track of the new album..." and... it's confusing.

He may be describing 'all their worlds' of the album in that second half? And that the title track is the best of them.

Agreed, is confusing - also wouldn't describe Lightning Bolt as a ballad. But he's talking about the song opposed to album. Someone tweeted him about it to ask if they could find it online yet and he said 'no' but that the song was 'ace'.

The "always something, never nothing" part could be described as the "ballad part" of the song. Kind of. A little bit. Maybe.

It might depend on the production as well. Apparently there's a piano on it.

It is funny you think there is any chance of humor in this thread.

My biggest fear of this response to LB is that it smells like the Backspacer effect. Immediately likeable, accessible, fun, rocking, etc. which leaves a great first impression. But it doesn't hold up over time. If anyone is susceptible for falling for this effect, it certainly appears to be this guy.

But no worries... pitchfork will surely give LB best new music status....

I have very much been looking forward to SBM regardless of what most people's first impressions were. Until I listened to a live version last night and just imagined that version with drums. I really want to hear someones impression that explains what the beat or tempo of the song is like.
The tempo seemed to be higher, but I am not even sure. I guess you either like this version or hate it, and of course, that can change again as well :).

groetjes,

Actually, in his defence, the reviewer has had LB for quite some time - he first tweeted about it a good six weeks or so ago. So this isn't a case of him giving it one spin and then delivering a snap judgement. He's been able to give it a good listen.
