I hate that. But also the groceries I go to often only have one checkout line open, so I get the desperation. But I’m consistently behind people who have way too much stuff (including produce), and don’t know how to use it

The only time I’ve seen anything like that was when they didn’t have any regular checkout lanes open. I had a small basket of 8-10 items when I got to the front and there were no lanes open. Everyone was using the self checkouts for buggy loads of groceries and the line of people waiting to use them was 10-12 deep. I just sat the basket down on the floor of one of the closed lanes and left.
