The numbers dont matter as much as the reactions. They fundamental dont trust each other and want to broadcast that (reply comments to the tweet make that even more clear) as one side was quick (excited?) to believe there was an overnight doubling, the other wants to attack them for it even though for a matter of time those actually were the official numbers, and you're right that both of them distract from the actual medical crisis (of which DeSantis is partially culpabable) in the state where millions will be traveling to for their August vacation.

The article S&D posted is summary of larger instances of such interactions over the last few years and what it all adds up to really does matter. Not in the sense that sometimes reporters and bureaucrats do make 'mistakes' on purpose or because it fits a narrative, but in the sense that for many people when they hear something that confirms what they want to believe they stop listening (i.e. the Big Lie). We all do it. There is not a single poster in this forum that hasn't done just that many, many times. So when we talk about institutional distrust and anti-vax sentiment, as this is the most serious impediment to a return to normalish, we have to understand it's real and it has roots. Perhaps a better example of this is that the low vax rate amoungst Black people is often explained as a reaction to the Tuskegee experiments, that they have a reason not to trust the US government telling them to take a shot. Well... same shit, different melanin level.

Find me a young black male living in Englewood who has any clue what the Tuskegee experiments were.

Also, lots of people see math and turn their brains off. It’s too complex, so we could blame the educational system here too, heh.

Which is frustrating that cold, hard numbers are unable to convey the situation to so many. Ripe to be politicized, I guess.

It’s almost that the data should be abandoned at this point, and have the messaging focus on things not being normal again til more people get vaccinated. Simplify it to the extreme, carrot and stick - which we’re starting to see more and more.

These are important, objective, science-backed points that need to be better communicated in the US. The measles vaccine comparison in particular as, at least in the media I consume, that crucial distinction is nearly completely absent, so when the hesitent portion of our domestic population sees other first-world nations being open about these things it bolsters the idea that our government is hiding something. We are still at the point where a significant portion of the media is laser focused on #vaccination and only alludes to waning immunity with weasel works like "some studies show.." while other nations are being far more transparent:
