I find it interesting we get the ice breaking clip at the end of this song given the album starts with this. Makes me think Who Ever Said and SuperBlood WolfMoon are like part 1 and part 2. There must be some connection between the two. Just a thought.

I was thinking of the band's habit (no pun intended) of jarringly copy-pasting minor / aggressive sections (usually verses) with major / happy sections (usually choruses) for songs like this, and how SBWM is the latest example, and possibly the most complex for a long while

and I don't know where their love of this structure started, but I do remember when I first noticed it, and struggled to accept it (grunge! smooshing against Kinks-esque rock n roll! egads!): it was "Green Disease"; of course I grew to love that song, but for a long time I wished it would just straight up melt my face, as RVM had once (in fact, the songs aren't too dissimilar for their finger-picked riffs clashing into their strummed-chord choruses)

and so we have that going on again with SBWM, except it's made even more muddled by the fact that we don't really know what's verse and what's chorus... and heck, it works; it's warming to me, the way GD did... and something like "Supersonic", "Big Wave", "Mind Your Manners" and "Comatose" didn't (the major exception to these is "Marker in the Sand", which is mainly hampered by S/T's production)

so uuuuh, all in all, do I think that SBWM is the best song of *this* type since "Green Disease"?

I really cringe at "hoping that I hurt your fist"; what does that even mean? is he going to like, break her fist when she goes to hold his hand? is he going to "accidentally on purpose" hit her fist with a hammer while doing the DIY? is he going to block one of her punches and send it right back? such an awkward lyric because I can't imagine it

She's beaten him to a pulp (eyes are swallen, face is broken), he can't answer in like because she's a girl, so he's at least hoping he hurt her fists with his face as the only means of retaliation he can afford.

Isn't that bluntly obvious or are you just pulling our leg here

I pulled the line out of context and didn't like it, but as we've dealt with now, it works with context (it wasn't bluntly obvious to me, and I still think there were better ways to express this idea)

Honestly - I was working towards discovering this song as a perhaps angry tantrum about death and losing a loved one.

And took her away too soon.

Never once thought this to be about a love interest gone wrong.

a) This song is better on headphones, b) It's a grower. I was finally able to make out most of the lyrics which is an issue on these types of songs where Ed races through his lines, one of the main reasons I prefer rockers with a more deliberate pace, at least with the vocals. Once I figured out what he was singing and now play the song in my car, I seem to like it more and more.

Yeah, I know this song has room to grow for me, because that always happens once I learn lyrics and can sing along.

Trying to read the tea leaves for Gigaton's ultimate tone, and I don't have time to do all the "math" in my head right now, but are there any songs post-Riot Act that mix this "fun" vibe with a lyric like, "Love notwithstanding we are each of us fucked"?

I asked Raz if she would like to hear the new Pearl Jam single. She asked if it was any good. I said it's a fast, heavier PJ song. She made a sour face and a few minutes passed. MFC was playing from our Spotify shuffle playlist. She said it's terrible. I said that's not it. I like this song and if you hate the energy of this you will really hate the new one. Then I put on the new one. She absolutely hated it and thought it was complete garbage and told me to turn it off please. She hates the way Ed sings on this kind of song. My sentiments exactly. Just... why?

Listened again this morning on headphones

this song is a pleasant surprise

it's an Ed rocker that would have been Whipping in 1995 but dialed forward 25 years and this is what is sounds like - it's more positive, but it's got some edge, and it's a bit more dynamic

anyone not listening on headphones or loud on good quality speakers is doing it wrong

I think the first 3 Tracks on this album in sequence are going to be a good run

I look forward to this song in the live show

i will go back and listen in that context but i read this as a romantic relationship or obsession. certain moments (and tone) struck me as too self-critical or judgemental to be about a death. but its not baldly stated anywhere so it could go either way

I hear parts of this about a love opportunity lost - not necessarily in a "sad" way - but in an exciting / the one that got away way
