I know Jeff's a Midlake fan and the band have mentioned before than he and Ed are usually the guys who pick the opening bands, so...

what happened to at the drive-in wanting to open for pearl jam? thats like a model wanting to blow you, not a whole lot to think about, just make it happen.

Midlake's first album was brilliant. The second one was dull as dishwater.

Hmm. Yeah, I think Van Occupanther transcended Radiohead comparisons but I can see why you'd say that; the next album was definitely a less interesting rehash of the first one (with a more stripped down production which, instead of making the album more intimate, made it more boring).

I'd say first album was Radiohead and Grandaddy inspired.

2nd - 70's SoCal. Fleetwood Mac, Eagles ish. lofi alt country.

3rd Album was British Folk inspired. Fairport Convention/Richard Thompson.

That's all very loose of course.

I like Fairport Convention / Richard Thompson. The problem isn't the folk references or inspirations, the problem is just that the structure of the songs is so similar throughout; such similar chord structures, and it's so obvious which chords are their favourites. It just seemed lazy, and for most of the songs you could predict where they were going before they went there.

so, is this more speculation, or are we pretty sure this will be the opening band?
ive never actually heard of them, but i want to listen to a couple of their albums before the shows if they will be the opener

Pearl Jam is one of the tags on that article... it's a done deal i'd say.

they have a new lead singer now, and their new stuff seems a bit more rock/psycahdelic

Holy shit, it gets mind-expandingly great at the 'Antiphon!' chorus. I never did drugs much, I probably should start.

I read an interview with the band, seems like he just packed up mid album process, quit the band and left town, what a lead singer move.

Mudhoney is opening in Portland. Woohoo! I love those guys.
