If gun owning America were a character in a movie, it would be played by Randy Quaid at his sloppiest but would have some weird disorder where he can only see Sam Elliott's reflection when he looks in the mirror.

Gun owners aren't holding the nation hostage. They're not remarkable enough for that. They're just like abortion-holocaust Catholics, anti-American terrorists, or guys looking for amputee prostitutes...they have one thing that reallllly works them up, to the point where they can't be bothered to consider any other issue.

I'm sure that if Clinton wins, Senate GOPers will bend over backwards to approve Garland; their explanations for going back on their "never ever" rhetoric will mirror the reformed "never Trumpers" and the world will continue to spin.

A lot of that is sensible, but this one:

The police are required to inspect your gun room. Since 1996, the police have inspected mine three or four times. While they can come randomly, they normally put a call through and we arrange an agreeable time to come in and inspect it. I’m happy for them to do it. I want them to see that it’s safe.

I'm a huge advocate for gun control, but no way do you allow police to inspect your home as a matter of policy.

When Newtown changed nothing that convinced me nothing was going change. I get called cynical and pessimistic for that but so far I've been proved right. Maybe this time, given the scale of the trage... nope, still nothing is going to change.

If we take the Statue of Liberty to be a symbol of... I don't know... LIBERTY, its rather easy to see that the NRA isn't a particularly immediate threat to it (and may in fact be too protective of it), unlike the people responsible for the Hebdo attacks, the Paris attacks and now Orlando, who are diametrically opposed to it, and who are getting little to no mention by the media or the president. Drawing a cartoon of a Muslim terrorist with a gun to the Statue of Liberty's head just won't do. This is willful and calculated obfuscation and exploitation.

I don't like the NRA's scorched Earth policy of dealing with gun rights either, but this isn't a gun rights issue, and the NRA didn't kill 50 people in Orlando. The Left is dead set on ignoring this, and are willfully changing the story to suit a more convenient narrative.

I also reject the idea that Islamic terrorism is some kind of unstoppable problem and we just have to live with it, or strip American citizens of their rights in order to prevent it. Its sheer cowardice.

My guess is that Obama made Garland fully aware of everything that could happen after he got nominated, including this scenario. If I were a Democrat, I would not feel bad if it happens.

I thought about this this week, and one possibility is that nothing changes until everything changes, and by that I mean if the Democrats are able to get full control of DC again. They've been pushed to get tougher on guns by their base recently, and we all know how much swap the NRA has on the GOP. And because divided power trends toward "do nothing", here we are.
