Being a lifelong Blue Oyster Cult fan has granted me immunity to this tendency (and also to most common low-level spells).Kevin Davis wrote:Questioning the provenance of a song that has six different writers on it is a perfectly natural level of interest to take in a band that you like.
yeah, I was really impressed by Ed’s signing on that as well. When Howard asked for it I thought, oh boy, how boring, but it sounded pretty good.VinylGuy wrote:damn that YL on Stern reminded me of how awesome that song is.
Mike was on fire really.
Goddamn. Who cares? Just be glad they kept it off the fucking solo record and saved it for the PJ record.Birds in Hell wrote:It's definitely more Wotman's riff than Ed's based on the latter's very hesitant attempts to play something remotely similar on Stern.FlatSideofaDog wrote:No, I don't think he's lying at all. What I'm getting at is: if the two riffs are similar but not the exact same, which riff is on the record? Ed's or Watt's? Stone said the song was 'Andrew's baby', which gives me the impression the recorded riff is Watt's. And if the recorded riff s not intuitive to Ed, that's another consideration.Arthur Morgan wrote:Yeah it doesn’t mean Ed was lying. He got about 80%?of it
I mean, it makes sense: the song was initially created during the Earthling sessions, the songs for which were co-written between Ed and Wotman. I can easily believe Wotman brought in a riff, Ed says it reminds him a bit of something he once wrote, and they knocked together a rough demo without thinking too hard about who was responsible for what (they were co-writing, after all). It doesn't fit on Earthling but they later bring it to the band in the Dark Matter sessions where it takes on new life.
I think the 'combined riff' fudge is some intentional obfuscation to make it sound less like the hotshot producer has started writing the tunes, which I suspect is the perception they're trying to avoid - but the explanation doesn't ring true, so it ends up sounding worse than simply admitting the song was built on a riff Wotman brought to Ed while making his solo record.
Well it’s not like BoB has any kind of ownership in the actual acts. I guess it’s producer points on units sold? Don’t really see how lucrative that would be at this point in time. How many units of Vs are gonna move in the next 5 years?stip wrote:so appare Hipgnosis, this Po guys company, bought BoB’s stake in the acts he produced. Thoughts? is that thanks in the liner notes sincere?

I get it. It doesn’t bother me personally. But I can understand how fans would be somewhat protective of the dynamic between the musicians, and that there is an extreme version of co-writer meddling that fans wouldn’t want, one which may not seem completely fantastical given Watt’s role with many other artists.daft twat wrote:It is, but to be so concerned about who wrote what is affecting your enjoyment seems over the top to me. If I go to a Michelin star restaurant and have the best meal of my life, I’m not going to give a shit if the sous chef got involved in the main entree.Kevin Davis wrote:Questioning the provenance of a song that has six different writers on it is a perfectly natural level of interest to take in a band that you like. Most Beatles songs are credited to Lennon/McCartney; volumes have been written analyzing and questioning how that partnership worked, and who did what.
Pearl Jam have periodically had minor credits to non-band members (or satellite band members) on original songs (i.e. “Smile,” “Love Boat Captain”). It’s no big deal. But it’s interesting to think about how it went.

The Hipgnosis company buying all the music publishing is totally separate to the 70s design firm by the same name, no relation whatsoever.
