Lament wrote:For me it's just about preserving the manner of experience an album that I am comfortable with and maximizes my enjoyment. Growing up in the 90's, when you were anticipating an album you had a single (sometimes two) that you dove into before the album was released. That process gave a definition to how I dug into albums I spent months looking forward to.

When the Manics were getting ready to release Know Your Enemy in 2001, four songs leaked from it a few months before, and I gladly jumped on them. They ended up playing another four or five on the radio before it came out, and I made it a point to find copies of those online as well. When the album actually came out, I realized I'd already become familiar with more than half of it, and it definitely put a damper on an experience that I had fallen in love with. After that, I've always stuck to "Is this something I would have had access to in advance of an album when I was a kid?" as a rule of thumb. It works for me, and I never really find myself wanting to "cheat." I don't begrudge people who jump on everything immediately, or those who do the complete opposite. I hope everybody does what works best for them.

That being said, I do think it's kinda cool to see I'm not the only person who feels this way.
Well said. I'm in the same boat with you, and mostly want to get the most out of my discovery phase with the album. I'd like to believe that it's carefully tracked to work well together, so that's another element of how you experience each track for the first time. I like the analogy of being in the 90's...

If we were in the 90's, we would now know 3 of the songs (MYM, Sirens and SBM kinda). Unless you were a very connected tape trader, you wouldn't have heard LB or FD. Even post-internet my average pre-album awareness tends to be in the 2-3 song range and I'm good with that. I suppose it's all a matter of your own personal no leak club rules. No we can go back to not talking about the leaks...

First rule of no leak club...no one talks about no leak club.

That's what's I've realized most about this song. After listening to MYM a few times, I could hum the melodies, sing the lyrics, etc etc.
After a fair amount of listens to Sirens, I don't necessarily remember any melodies or chords or words (except "hear the sirens"), instead I remember the feeling I have when listening

Really? Mine would have to be Daughter when I was in college (I'm old). Something about those opening chords blew me away. Plus we played it to death. Now I don't even love the song.

I remember the catch my breath to breathe line, but that's just because it was talked about from one of the reviews.

well, WWS is a top 10 song for me (maybe even top 5) but it was just a breath of fresh air, a relief really, after Riot Act. It addressed every concern I had about the direction of the band in 3 minutes and 30 glorious seconds.

the thing is that every song we've heard so far actually feels really different from each other, but they all flow together quite nicely.

It really is starting to look like they did something pretty special with this record.

Are we strictly talking studio versions? If not then Animal had we jumping around like an idiot. Studio wise probably Go. Seems I'm stuck in 93.

yeah, but the thing is coming out of 10 I was riding a pearl jam high and as long as a single didn't suck (not that those aren't incredible songs) I wouldn't care. WWS' high is magnified because my least favorite pearl jam album had just followed my second least favorite.

In that case Nothing As It Seems. Binaural was a disappointment initially as that song knocked my socks off

Hey guys, I'm actually really glad that I listened to Sirens. I was surprised to find out that I actually like it. I'm not crazy about it, but I certainly liked it better on first listen than some other PJ singles in the past. I think getting a little taste of it now will really help me fully digest it when I sit down with the full-length album.

I'm a little bit in Doc's camp in that I will just give this a few listens to get a taste for it and then pack it away so that everything is fresh for my first listen to the full album. I only listened to MYM about 10 times, so I'll probably do the same with Sirens, and then it's cold turkey for me.

Seriously though, when they played Animal at the '93 MTV music video awards, I think I nearly ran straight through my living room out a pure teenage hype energy blast angst-filled fuckin' crazy fuck whatever shit was going on with my body :bammer: Still to this day, my highest of PJ-induced highs 8-)

The 2 listens will be it for me, but for a song like sirens, i really think i did need a little taste so i can not be overwhelmed by it when i listen to the rest of the album

I'm wearing a rather large beanie today. I don't want anyone to see my ear-boners.

Yep, only the official video so far. It's great, it's a little fluffy around the edges in terms of production, but it works for me. It's not nauseatingly soft like JB, and didn't miss it's target like ATW did (by miles).

I can see what they were aiming for, and have nailed it with shit hot fire.
