I just completely fail to understand how the three of them could be in the studio, working on such a turd of an album, and two of them really felt like the material was good enough to warrant a usurping of power and the hurting their friends's feelings. Utterly baffling.
This is still only one side of the story.
And, to be fair, a skewed retelling of that one side of the story.
I love trag, but his comments reflect his perception/feelings more than any "facts" that have been presented, so far. Which is totally fair game and more power to him. I mean that's kinda the point of a message board. It's just worth keeping in mind.
Even Janet's comments as posted the page before are far more nuanced, layered, and clear-eyed than a few of the posts responding to those comments would seem to reflect.

I like the album. I thought it was very good when it came out and it kinda disappeared to me, but i like it. Its a good effort to get out from their confort zone.
Janet decided to go, nobody seem to have fired her. It was her choice, so live with it. I dont really get all her talk about the equality and stuff...in every creative project things change. And they change again.

As someone who has been far less invested in this band, knows less about the history of this band, and is a newer fan of this band (all things that could be weaknesses or strengths in this debate) than the majority of people here, my reading of this situation is more on your side TVG. I don't totally agree with everything you're saying, but overall, yeah.
Except, I adore the new record and it hasn't dropped off at all for me. It's still in frequent heavy rotation. It's still in my top 3 of the year. Like all great art, it's actually opened up even more for me as time has gone on.

Even if hated the new album, its a bold move. They really went for something new. I feel bad for Janet if she felt lonely in the creative part of the writiing or recording but at the same time...it just an album.

I've never been in a band. I can't speak to what that feels like personally. But I can imagine the level of familial bonding from other experiences, at least to some degree. I would never discredit or disparage Janet's feelings about how things went down. I do think it sucks. And I also feel badly for her.

Agreed. She couldn't just go along for the ride for a while? Carrie and Corin wanted to try something new, Janet didn't like it, so she left.

A full album cycle is a pretty long commitment to a situation that doesn't feel good.
Especially when the perceived message is "you no longer get ANY input." That's a tough look.

Again, who know for sure what happened. Corin and Carrie were also the main creative force with SK, Janet came along the way and became a true force of nature, thats why all of this is a shame.
BUT im sure something else touched her to be so drastic in her choice.

Especially if that album is titled "Lightning Bolt"

Back to discussing the music. To me, their 2 quintessential (best?) songs are One More Hour & Youth Decay. Honorable mention to Jumpers. I would like to hear y’alls opinion on this “question”.

I still haven't digested their entire catalog, so my $0.2 probably isn't as valuable here but I would 100% agree on Youth Decay. Jumpers is definitely worthy of the conversation. And I'll add One Beat to the discussion, too. On a personal level, Modern Girl is probably the first song I think of when S-K is mentioned. So it's the most quintessential to me personally but maybe not to the band or fans as a whole.

Modern Girl was, maybe, their first attempt to do a pop song.

It's so good. I just watched a video of a live performance of it a week or so ago and it gave me chills.
