I got to go to Vince Gill’s house in Nashville a few years back for an interview. We knocked on the door and a minute later Amy Grant (Mrs. Gill) opens the door in her gardening clothes. I knew they were married and all, I just wasn’t expecting her to answer the door. She’s still a babe.

Hey man why do you think it's so funny the idea that a large number of people actually do use Rotten Tomatoes to decide which superhero movie they're going to spend their weekend free-time on.

Just want to follow-up--I'm really interested in this question and want to pursue it further.

Just so it's clear this is the question I am asking:
LoathedVermin72 wrote:Mickey wrote:VinylGuy wrote:Who cares about Rotten Tomatoes?? People choose to see or not a movie because of that?
Uhhh...yes? Strong yes.

Yes! People do choose to "see or not" a movie because of RT. Do you disagree? Why or why not? Please limit your answer to 500 words.

I don't disagree in the slightest.

Let's get back to my question though:
Do you truly think the idea that people do not use Rotten Tomatoes in their decision-making process is so absurd as to be laughable? I gotta say man, that feels like a really untenable position, given that the site makes money on ad revenue and there's really no reason to *go* to the site if you're not going to use that info.

Or instead are you assuming that *I* use Rotten Tomatoes to make my super-hero movie-going decisions, thus evincing that I am a hopelessly out-of-touch wanna-be cultural elite, ensconced in my Princeton bubble and pandering to whichever way the cultural wind blows?

The latter of course would be wrong--I don't watch any superhero movies.

Why not? You are thinking avout seeing a movie, but don’t want to see a shit one. So you check the rating in the newspaper, or on rateyourmusic, rt , metacritic or imdb or whatever. It’s not rocket science.

I think the bare fact that it exists and has existed for so long means that people are doing...precisely that.

Yo J-Man a quick search shows that this is a hobby-horse of yours:
LoathedVermin72 wrote:It’s not about ratings, though. The problem with IMDb and RT is how they’re referred to culturally. They’ve both played a big role in debasing film criticism and appreciation.
RYM is not any kind of cultural touchstone.
But wouldn't this merely prove my point--i.e. if these institutions actually "played a big role" then that means that people do *use them*?
