Clearly, this has a chance to become one of the notable 'later in career' regular radio rotation tracks in the band's career - a DTE or Just Breathe.

It should appeal beyond the fanbase and get regular rotation for more than a month or two, as opposed to a 'Mind Your Manners' or 'Worldwide Suicide' where the tracks were given token promotion and lacked longevity / sticking power.

For that to happen, it usually has to be one of a very superficially appealing anthem, a strong and concise example of what the band is all about or an interesting cross-over oddity with lots of radio friendly hooks. I imagine it falls into the latter category.

In watching the video a couple more times, it's interesting to me where "manmade" things appear (a plowed field, oil, a satellite) and when I then think of the gender specific "girls wanna/boys wanna" lyrics it makes me think of mother nature as the female. That makes me think this is a much more cryptic lightening bolt.

I have tactically chosen to omit those. Popular yes, but I assume that's more due to their direct appeal for the MOR adult contemporary crowd, where they'd be in rotation between Livin on a Prayer and Another Day in Paradise.

DOTC definitely has a Pitchfork / BBC 6music appeal, somewhat - I agree with the Arcade Fire reference.

Well. My son (9 yrs old) who enjoys everything but Pearl Jam. Has been walking around singing - Stand back from the spirit cones. I just let him sing it the way he is singing it. Simply because it makes me smile. I have played the song a number of times in the kitchen..while making food, doing dishes etc and have not bothered to try to get anyone in my family on board. Years of failure I guess. But through osmosis, they have absorbed the tune. In passing I have heard...

1. Wife. "Really like that song" AND she went as far as to pick it on satellite radio when it popped up. First time that has ever happened!
2. Son 9 - " Dad. What is a spirit cone?" - Haven't decided how to weave this into a grand lie as of yet or just tell him the actual line. But he's singing a line from it on his own!
3. Son 14 - "Meh. Not horrible"

I can't rock with this. I like they did something different and it sounds really good, better than what they've been churning out these past few years. I'm looking forward the album and checking it out in its entirety. But this doesn't do it for me.

Thanks to DOTC I no longer have to regard PJ as a guilty pleasure and can openly rock to this tune in front of other people
