Invariably when a batter works the count for a well-earned walk, the announcer says it was a “good at bat.”

I hate that a walk doesn’t count as an at bat.

But if it did, it would have to be figured into the batting average wouldn’t it?

I don't see why they couldn't count it as a single.

Because it wasn’t a hit.

If the batter makes it to first base, what's the difference?

I just told you the difference. It wasn’t a hit.

I agree with bammer. If a batter walks, it should be an at bat. You can’t walk unless you’re up there AT BAT. But because they have no way of incorporating that into the batting average they’re only considered as a plate appearance.

So just stop thinking of batting average as hits/no hits and instead.. wait.. don't they already have an "on base percentage"? I haven't paid attention to baseball in years.

In baseball statistics, on-base percentage (OBP) is a measure of how often a batter reaches base for any reason other than a fielding error, fielder's choice, dropped or uncaught third strike, fielder's obstruction, or catcher's interference. OBP is calculated in Major League Baseball (MLB) by dividing the sum of hits, walks, and times hit by a pitch by the sum of at-bats, walks, times hit by pitch and sacrifice flies.[1

I don't like that sacrifice flies are part of the denominator

"Fit" doesn't bother me in the slightest. "Rizz" is definitely stupid though.

As for "Razz", she's almost certainly a saintly figure for putting up with our boy Tree.
