Seguin traded to Dallas

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=426938

The Boston Bruins and Dallas Stars have completed a blockbuster seven-player trade that will see two prominent players swap jerseys.

The Bruins traded Tyler Seguin, Rich Peverley and Ryan Button to the Stars in exchange for Loui Eriksson, Joe Morrow, Reilly Smith, and Matt Fraser.

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com says that Eriksson agreed to waive his no-trade clause earlier on Thursday.

Seguin has yet to begin a six-year, $34.5 million contract he signed just prior to the beginning of the lockout. The deal has an annual salary cap hit of $5.75 million and runs until the 2018-19 season.

The 21-year-old forward was selected second overall in the first round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the Bruins and spent the first three seasons of his NHL career with the team.

Seguin was the first of three players selected by the Bruins with draft picks acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 2009 deal for forward Phil Kessel.

In his rookie season, Seguin had 22 points in 74 regular season games and then scored three goals and seven points in 13 playoff games as the Bruins captured the Stanley Cup in 2011.

Eriksson, 27, has three years remaining on his contract and has a cap hit of $4.25 million per year.

He played in all 48 games last season for Dallas, recording 12 goals and 17 assists. In the four seasons before the lockout, the winger recorded at least 26 goals in each campaign.

In 501 career regular season games, Eriksson has posted 150 goals and 207 assists.

Peverley, 30, had six goals and 12 assists in 47 games for the Bruins this season. The seven-year NHL veteran began his career with the Nashville Predators and played for the Atlanta Thrashers before being traded to Boston in February, 2011.

Morrow, 20, is an Edmonton native who played last season in the American Hockey League. In 66 games with Scranton Wilkes-Barre and Texas, the defenceman had five goals and 14 assists. He was Pittsburgh's first-round pick (23rd overall) in the 2011 draft, and was traded to Dallas as part of the Brenden Morrow deal on Mar. 24 this year.

Smith is a 22-year-old Toronto native who appeared in 37 games for the Stars last season. The forward had three goals and six assists and was the Stars' third-round draft choice in 2009.

Fraser, 23, hails from Red Deer, Alberta and had one goal and two assists in 12 games for Dallas last season. The forward signed as a free agent by the Stars in November, 2010.

Button, 22, is an Edmonton native who split his time last season between the ECHL and the AHL. The blueliner was Boston's third-round pick in 2009.

Message sent, underperform in the playoffs and you're gone. I like the trade in that Bruins needed the cap room and they obviously had some issues with Seguin. They must be counting on Soderberg to be able to step in as 3rd line center

or are they? i agree with you that i would have thought they could get more for him, but i wonder if this will turn out to be the right move for the team.

Wow, didn't see that coming. I think it's pretty good value for Seguin, considering Morrow is a high-end defensive prospect and I've always found Eriksson is vastly underrated. I don't know much about the other players Boston got and I kind of can't be bothered to look right now, but on the surface it looks pretty good.

here's a re-cap (yes, i've been keeping track of the two previous biggest moves of my bruins fandom... eventhough the bourque trade was the biggest move of my life and they let all the players they got for him walk soon after):
Spoiler: show
  • The Joe Thornton Trade Tree:

Joe Thornton for Wayne Primeau-Brad Stuart-Marco Sturm

Wayne Primeau-Brad Stuart for Andrew Ference-Chuck Kobasew

Chuck Kobasew for Craig Weller-Alexander Fallstrom-Minnesota's 2nd in 2011 (Alexander Khokhlachev)

    Craig Weller-Byron Bitz-Tampa's 2nd in 2010 for Dennis Seidenberg-Matt Bartkowski

Marco Sturm for 'to be determined'/player to be named

so in the end, the Bs organization turned one player into:

two top four d-men (Ference & Seidenberg),
their #4 prospect (Alexander Khokhlachev, projected for Providence in ’13-14),
their #14 ranked prospect (Fallstrom, currently in Providence),
and their #17 ranked prospect (Bartkowski, currently in NHL)

    The Phil Kessel Trade Tree:

    Phil Kessel for 2010 1st round pick, 2011 1st round pick and a 2010 2nd round pick

1st Rd. Pick 2010: Tyler Seguin

Traded in 2013 w/ Rich Peverley-Ryan Button to Dallas for Loui Eriksson-Joe Morrow-Reilly Smith-Matt Fraser

2nd Rd. Pick 2010: Jared Knight

1st Rd. Pick 2011: Dougie Hamilton

so in the end, the Bs organization turned one player into:

a top 6 forward (Loui Eriksson),
their top prospect (Hamilton, currently in the NHL),
their #5 ranked prospect (Knight, projected for Providence in ’13-14),
and Dallas’s #5, #10, and #12 prospects respectively (Morrow, Smith, and Fraser all projected for Providence in ’13-14).

what about trading away richards & carter and them winning the cup? not to mention adding to that by overpaying bryz and handing columbus the top goalie in the league? owe, and wouldn't you rather have JVR over the next 5 seasons than VL? i would.
sportsfreakpete6 wrote:these conversations wouldn't be happening if he went to Red Wings/Hawks/Bruins
you're right, b/c those three teams have made moves that won them each a stanley cup. lolgren has worked hard for every critic he has.
I've mentioned before how incomparable it is between Richie and carter on the flyers and them on the kings...on the kings they were the 3 and 4 guys behind brown and kopitar whereas they were 1 and 2 in Philly...much harder to play that role.

I think Bobrovsky will continue to be a strong goalie long term but to call him the best goalie in the league is pretty ridiculous...he won the vezina in a half season and is pretty far behind lundqvist, miller and others...not to mention he plays in fucking columbus...it is a little easier to play there than Philadelphia

and jvr was just not cutting it here, he needed new scenery

I'm not completely disagreeing that homer hasn't been a great gm but my comment about Vinny in Detroit or Chicago means I'm saying I think its pretty ridiculous to say Vinny is a bad signing just because he chose Philly...we wouldn't be saying its a bad signing if he made the same deal in Detroit or Chicago or wherever...and its very possible very similar offers were put up by other franchises...his future play will not be dictated by what gm hired him...hes considered one of the top 3 FAs of the season so trying to say its bad is pretty silly

and who's the gm that constructed the team to be lead by MR & JC (i.e. gave them #1 & #2 $)?

that's all i was referring to.

which supports the bad-decision-making of the gm that brought bryz into that hell-hole.

i was mostly thinking of matching $.

nobody is saying getting VL is a bad move, but i'm thinking he's in philly b/c they offered more $ or years than the other cities you mentioned... which represents a bad decision by the gm.

Here's my favourite:
Spoiler: show
Barry Pederson for Cam Neely and a 1st round pick in 1987 (Glen Wesley)

Glen Wesley for Hartford's 1st in 1995 (Kyle McLaren), 1996 (Johnathan Aitken) and 1997 (Sergei Samsonov)

Kyle McLaren and Boston's 4th in 2004 for Jeff Hackett and Jeff Jillson

Sergei Samsonov for Marty Reasoner, Yan Stastny and Edmonton's 2nd in 2006 (Milan Lucic)

Jeff Jillson for Brad Boyes

Brad Boyes for Dennis Wideman

Dennis Wideman, 1st round pick in 2010 (Derek Forbert), 3rd round pick in 2011 (Kyle Rau) for Nathan Horton and Gregory Campbell

Basically, the Cam Neely trade in 1986 played an integral role in the Boston Bruins winning the Cup in 2011.

To me, it's a bad decision because they already have a strong forward group and have plenty of other holes to fill with want little cap space they had left before signing Lecavalier.

After Giroux's extension today, they now have $12 million of cap space left for next year, and that's without Schenn and Couturier's new contracts, an even more porous defense and no goalie. Holmgren seems to love putting them in a tough cap spot and trying to figure things out later.

i'd say the Thornton trade was just as important considering the money saved by moving thornton allowed them to pay chara, but yeah, that's a great tree.

These are good points. Unless Coots gets a significant offensive numbers boost his cap hit increase will be minimal and truthfully, same goes for schenn, who has underperformed since arriving

that's all well and good, but what about the "porous defense and no goalie" it sounds like timmy time is not going to work out.

I keep hearing people say the bruins won the Seguin trade. How is trading the future of the franchise for short term cap relief a win?

The Bruins are a really good team right now, and they just added a 27-year-old Selke contending winger coming off a bunch of 70-point seasons and a good prospect. It's not like they only got cap relief. There's a good chance that this trade makes the team better for this coming season.
