Re: Lightning Bolt - October 15
here's my initial thoughts
getaway - love the groove and the melody
LB - like the live version but cleaner, vocals at the end by ed are great in the studio version, as opposed to the live one where he struggled
LTRP - not bad, i love blues. i can see myself getting a bit bored with this one though
swallowed hole - love the intro. song itself is ok, i prob need to listen to it a few more times to like it

Well they are "good" as in way better than either of the live recordings.Dr. Van Nostrand wrote:are these things of good sound quality?

and they give you a good sense of what the songs are going to be like, but the studio quality should be significantly better. Imagine a cassette tape copied a bunch of times.

'Getaway' is mind-blowingly groovy, more than I ever thought they'd achieve after Riot Act. I love the shit out of it. The guitars don't do as much as they could at the end, but God, I'm not going to be that picky. 8.5/10
'Lightning Bolt' - starts subtle and Yield-ish, which is great. Interesting layering. There's a tiny little warbly laser thing in the back for a few seconds that I don't like. The 'Lightning Baaaawlt' vocals are turned *down* in the mix for the chorus, which makes it far more tolerable. Other than that, it's all a bit more produced than I'd like. But... good. It becomes really good at the louder part of the last verse. Little laser thing comes back for a few seconds but that's OK. I freaking love Mike's lead guitar part at the end, and don't mind the fadeout. There is something else that's about to come in towards the end of the track. It's much better than the live version even if Matt's drumming is a little more subdued. 7.5/10.
LTRP - It sounds to me like T.Rex. Very glam rock. NICE, light years away from Supersonic. THIS IS THE FUN THEY SHOULD BE HAVING, hand claps and all. The soloing is more Binaural or Riot Act than Backspacer. 8.5/10
Swallowed Whole - Definite ITW vibe. It's definitely hippy tree-hugging stuff, but I happen to like all of that. The success of this track will depend entirely on how much you're into pseudo eco-poetry and conservation rock. The bridge is lovely and has a little of the hairs-on-the-back-of-the-neck feeling of Yield. I've wanted this band to become genuinely emotional again. Some people will feel they are here. For me, a solid 7/10.
A couple of these would've been marked higher but I know we have better songs coming. This is much more of a serious record than Backspacer already.

Certainly a lot of keys on Lightning and Swallowed Whole.
Swallowed Whole is definitely my favorite of the new songs....it's the only one that matches Mind Your Manners in terms of quality...and it makes me sad that Let the Records Play was really one of the most releasable things they had prepped.

Just now getting thru LB love it so far. Guess everyone was right about Eddie probably screwing up the lyrics and repeating a part that shouldn't have been with the whole wild seeds part... Getaway was awesome! LTRP starting now...wow thats diferent. Me likey! Happy Friday all!!

I might mark LTRP slightly lower as time goes by. It's a bit generic in spite of its enjoyability. But I'm just freaking happy it doesn't sound like Supersonic, so yeah.McParadigm wrote:Certainly a lot of keys on Lightning and Swallowed Whole.

LTRP is cool. Unfortunately they didn´t make it a la QOTSA: The chorus and bridge are too friendly. It had potential.
