I still can't get over how much I'm loving ALL of these and how very different each of them is from one another. My favorite by far though right now still has to be LTRP. It's very (Black Keys if they had a much "fuller" sound) and I'm loving it. I'm also loving the added level of depth in these songs as compared to Backspacer. The arrangements are more complex than I thought they would be and that pleases me to no end. So stoked for next month now! (Not that I wasn't already)

It really is. Nothing on Backspacer moved me. That little section you are talking about I connected with immediately.
:nice:

PJ has its groove and feeling back, imo. It might be different groove and feeling to the old stuff but it's OK by me.

I will tip my hat to Brendan O'Brien, actually. At the very least, he can display restraint when he wants to. Songs like Getaway didn't need any twinkle, and they haven't got any.

How bad is the fade out on LB? Is there enough of a jam at the end before it's over?

There's no solo to speak off in the end, just Mike playing a funky "pattern", so the fade out's OK

The harmonising second guitar part that comes in for the chorus of LB is very nice. And the Beach Boys lead part from Mike that comes in before the bridge is very appropriate, where it wasn't so fitting on the intro of GSMF.

The only consolation there is that his Wrigley solo wasn't much to write home about either. And I *really* like the tune of the 'pattern' anyway, so...

Slow your roll there a bit, even the Gagas and Katy Perry's of the world struggle to sell a million these days . This ain't the 90s. . . . .

First listen thoughts:

If I were to rank them

1) Getaway
2) Swallowed Whole
3) Let The Records Play
4) Lightning Bolt

Getaway is just great. I don't think it sound like anything they've done before, which is not a bad thing. I love the melody in the vocal over the choppy guitar. Much better than the Doug version, lol.

Swallowed Whole has a fantastic chorus.

Let The Records Play also doesn't sound like anything they've done before. The Brian Setzer-y guitar at the beginning is pretty sweet.

Lightning Bolt is definitely a lot like Unthought Known. It's a good song, but I hate how Eddie yells at the end like at the concert...

Overall, I'm pumped for these songs, mainly because I thought these would be the so-so songs based off the initial reviews. Now I'm REALLY excited for Infallibottle (couldn't resist), Pendulum, Sirens, and Yellow Moon!

There's enough for me, but if you're asking the question, then the answer is probably no. It could've easily gone on longer.

Ed's voice is a bit too "fancified" with layering during the chorus, but it sounds appropriate.
I think it's the same sound effect as in "All along they're saying..." on MYM

Why does everything exciting always happen when I'm away? Now I have to waste the rest of the day catching up on this thread and searching for songs.

The opening riff of Swalled Whole sounds like an acoustic version of the opening riff of Halloween in Heaven by Type O Negative. LB is the worst of the 4, but not bad in itself, and better than the live version. First impression is a solid 4/5. LTRP is awesome.

First pass of Getaway lyrics

everyone’s a critic looking back up the river
every boat is leaking in this town
everybody is thinking they can all be delivered
sitting in a box like lost and found

but i found my place and it’s all right
we’re all searching for a better way
get this off my plate
it’s all right
I got my own way to believe

find a lighthouse in the dark stormy weather
we all could use a sedative right now
holy rollers sitting with their backs to the middle
all alone and sinking ???

and if you want to have to pray
it’s all right
we all be thinking with our different brain
get this off my plate
it’s all right
I got my own way to believe

it’s okay
sometimes you find yourself having to put all your faith in no faith
mine is mine and yours won’t take its place
now make your getaway

science says we’re making love like the lizards
try and say that fossils ain’t profound
silence says we’re not allowed to consider
silence says stand up sit down you’re out

But I found my place
and it’s all right
I’m bearing witness to ????
get this off my plate
it’s all right
I’ve got my own way to believe

it’s okay
sometimes you find yourself being told to change your ways
there’s no way
mine is mine and yours won’t take its place
now make your getaway

it’s okay
sometimes you find yourself having to put all your faith in no faith
mine is mine and yours won’t take its place
now make your getaway
it’s okay
sometimes you find yourself being told to change your ways
for god’s sake
mine is mine and yours won’t take its place
now make your getaway

Does Eddie yell 'Fuck!' near the end of LB like he did live?
