A post I read on the Pit regarding opening bands:

"Hopefully they don't have one. Honestly, I'd rather sit in silence in the hour or so before PJ comes on. At least then I can talk to my friends without having to scream over the noise of opening bands."

That speaks more to what Pearl Jam's fanbase has become than anything we can mockingly make up.

I swear, most of these people don't like music. They just like Pearl Jam.

I tend to agree with that. I like live music, but an arena is often not a great place to hear an artist if you aren't familiar with their work. I can't think of a single opening set I've seen in 20+ concerts that I was glad I saw. I listen politely and may kinda like a song here or there but it's not a great way to hear new music, I think. At least for me. I really appreciate live music when I know the artist already

See, I've found a lot of Pearl Jam openers to be immensely enjoyable, even in big arena/ampitheatre settings. The Buzzcocks, Sleater-Kinney, Frank Black & The Catholics, Sonic Youth, Bad Religion...they were all great fun, and got my level of excitement for being at show jacked up even higher. I found the lack of an opening act at Wrigley to be super anti-climactic and boring, and I always find the way before a Springsteen show to be insufferable due to the lack of any opening act. I dunno...an act would have to be pretty terrible for me to think "I'd rather just sit here in silence." And if they are that bad, there's plenty of places to hang out till they're done to avoid them.

Yeah, for all that opening acts can be a bit dull sometimes, I feel as if a gig isn't complete without one.

I got to know a lot of bands and songs through Pearl Jam over the years, so it's ironic there are people now that don't care for opening bands. Usually the bands PJ picks to open have some connection to them or are artists they greatly admire. Often they are bands of which they have played covers of as well. I remember people shrugging at X but getting excited when they played Devil Doll or Poor Girl.

I wonder what that Pit douchenozzle would think of the time I saw Brad support Ben Harper. Or all the support slots PJ once played.

Also, a good support band can ratchet up the main acts intensity. This summer PJ go on after Arcade Fire. That should put some fire up them.

Y'know, the more I think about this ... I wouldn't be shocked by the inclusion of a social-conscious, Seattle-based musician, even if he's a rapper.
