which would figure, since joyce wasn't even paying attention.

Extend the basepath out from the infield grass. He's in the basepath. Only part of your body needs to be in the basepath.

Btw, that's a cute screengrab of Joyce. Reminds me of taking a quote out of context. Watch the video... Joyce's head goes back and forth between the obstruction and teh outfield. He sees it.

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-bas ... ddlebrooks

or look at this screenshot of him watching the obstruction.

Image

Why haven't you talked about Middlebrooks trying to trip him? His feet were on the ground and then come up when the runner tries to go over him....
1) he's not in the path toward home, he's in the path toward 2nd, which means middlebrooks is allowed to obstruct craig in that direction b/c of the throw on the play toward that base.
2) joyce doesn't need to look to the outfield that's why there's an ump out there, not to mention the other umps on the field, joyce's at third to be the authority for that base... he should stick with watching what's going on there.
3) middlebrooks was moving his legs to help himself get up (a push-up is easier from your knees, no?) and then stops when he realizes/feels craig moving over him. i didn't comment b/c i didn't think it was an issue, which, if you do believe it's obstruction, shouldn't matter anyway b/c intent doesn't matter. right? whether you believe the play is obstruction or not, it doesn't matter what middlebrooks is doing. the fact that he's in the way is b/c of the play in the basepath for which he was making a play. if it was a pickle between home and third, or middlebrooks was trying to receive saltalamacchia's throw in the path toward home then it would make sense.
1) He is in the basepath to 2nd. He is also in the basepath to home. Again extend it from the grass. Your picture even shows his left leg is in the basepath to home.
2) Irrelevent. Your point of the photo was that he wasn't paying attention to the play @ 3rd. He was. The video shows it and the screen grab I posted shows he's watching it.
3)No he's not trying to get up. If you're trying to get to your feet, you don't put them higher in the air. He demonstrates this when he gets up later by getting on his knees and putting his FEET ON THE GROUND - not further up in the air and then pushing himself back to his feet. I have no idea how you are trying to get up on your feet by putting your feet in the air  Seriously try it. get down on your stomach and try to get up by putting your feet higher in the air. The quickest way is to pull your knees forward (yes a push up with your knees is easier) and your feet DOWN ON THE GROUND (not the opposite direction they need to go to get on your feet), pushing you up to standing position.

You're right, though, it doesn't matter for obstruction. But by him putting his legs up, instead of jsut laying there, you would at least have the argument of victim of circumstance. By putting his legs up, he's intentionally trying to slow down the runner, losing even that argument.

.
the basepath... is established by the player, not the grass/dirt/field.

if he trips over 3rd, and stumbles to 10 feet into foul territory, and get up, the baseline is now, from where he stands, to 3rd or home a direct line.
on a dropped strike 3... the batter can actually walk all the way back to the dugout, then try to run to first and establish a baseline.

so the basepath/baseline is not in question at all in the play last night... its not established until Craig is too his feet and starts home, from that point to home is the base path.
elliseamos wrote:welp, that's that.

here's how it is in the actual rule book... this example is used:
Rule 2.00 (Obstruction) Comment: If a fielder is about to receive a thrown ball and if the ball is in flight directly toward and near enough to the fielder so he must occupy his position to receive the ball he may be considered “in the act of fielding a ball.” It is entirely up to the judgment of the umpire as to whether a fielder is in the act of fielding a ball. After a fielder has made an attempt to field a ball and missed, he can no longer be in the “act of fielding” the ball. For example: an infielder dives at a ground ball and the ball passes him and he continues to lie on the ground and delays the progress of the runner, he very likely has obstructed the runner.
i find it incredible that despite the fact that a fielder is on the ground due to the act of trying to make a play, he's then supposed to disappear so that the runner can advance. stupid baseball. :|
how amazing is it, that the rule is written in the rule book almost like they already saw the play happen from last night? and it was in there pretty much forever.
sounds like MLB/Umpires will review the rule and the "intent" portion of it...
just imagine if thats how game 7 ended...

oh, and Saltys throw wasnt as bad as Middlebrooks missing the catch? it almost looks like he thinks its a force play?
and, I can think of one other time a runner did not cross home but was awarded the run...

Carlos Gomez vs the Atlanta Braves play, he never scored lol

i kinda dig that farrell's managing his pitching staff like it's game seven tonight. too many managers seem to have no sense of urgency this early on in the series.

Throw day for Lackey anyway so it changes nothing for Game 6 availability.

What an awful way for the game to end for the Cards. I have to hand it to Uehara for picking him off. The Red Sox played a much better game tonight.

The Cardinals haven't played a good game yet this whole series. Most of the lineup is scuffling, the defense hasn't been good and the baserunning terrible. I fully expect them to come out and kick some ass in Game 5 but that might nnot matter. I have no confidence in their ability to hit Lester at all.

Still, tied 2-2 with Wainwright and Wacha coming up in Games 5 and 6 is a pretty good position to be in.

we still have at least 2, at most 3 games to go... but
this has to be one of the best post seasons ever...
just about ever game, in ever series, has been within 2 runs in the 9th inning...

if this thing doesnt go 7 im going to feel cheated :peace:

Have to give Buchholz credit, there is definitely something wrong with him but he gutted it out

They should still see if some team is willing to give them a stupid return come the offseason though

If Sox hadn't made two big, stupid throws to third base, it's possible that this series could have been over by now.

And if the Cards hadn't pooped themselves in Game 1, this could be 3-1, Cards.

Crazy series. Are non Sox and Cards fans enjoying these nail biters?

as far as the end of game 3, that was a stupid set of plays all around.
too bad its not like football where both teams get a penalty for being stupid and just do it over.

runner never should of gone on contact.
catcher shouldn't of thrown the ball.
3rd basemen should of got off the bag and kept the ball in front.
where the backup?
3rd base coach should of called the runner back.

Absolutely! Would have loved to have seen the Pirates get a little further into October, tough.
In the end, I just wanna good series
