He said, 'You cannot live in the ocean'
And she said to him
'You never can live in the sky'
But the ocean is filled with tears
And the sea turns into a mirror
There's a whale in the moon when it's clear
And a bird on the tide
Please don't cry
Let me dry your eyes
So tell me that you will wait for me
Hold me in your arms
I promise we never will part
I'll never sail back to the time
But I'll always pretend you're mine
Though I know that we both must part
You can live in my heart
I’m months behind on this, but while Alice is maybe at the bottom of the post blue valentines albums fish and bird is a remarkably moving song

I haven't really kept up with any developments, but has there been any indication about the possibility of new Waits work in the pipeline?

Have we talked about this Tom Waits podcast?
If we have, I missed it. Someone just told me about it last night. It's called "Waits, Waits, Don't Tom Me" and it's absurd. Each episode is like 6 mins long and it's just "Tom" jawing about some topic or other. The one I listened to today was about his role in Dracula and eating bugs.
To be clear, I'm not sure that it's really Tom Waits. I think it's an impression/comedy podcast. But I found that one episode funny.

Phoebe Bridgers does a really nice version of "Day After Tomorrow" for her annual charity single

Man, what a gut-punch that song was coming out in Fall 2004, with the Iraq War in full swing and GWB on the verge of re-election. That line about shoveling snow and raking leaves is just devastating. It sits so quietly at the end of Real Gone, and is so different from what I think about when I think about that album, that it often falls off my radar when I think about great Tom Waits songs, but it definitely is one.

Remember, folks, if this sends you running to re-visit the original, don't do it on Spotify! Tom has only put up a mangled "remastered" version of the Real Gone album up there, the bastard, and god only knows what devastation he has wreaked upon this track. Go dig the old CD out of your closet or listen to an old YouTube video like this one
(I listened to the remastered version for the sake of science and it is not as good. OK, OK, I could barely tell the difference but what he did to Hoist that Rag is a crime and the stink rubs off)

The remaster fucking sucksssssss. Lots of small mix changes that are almost universally worse than, and the grit is sorely missed.
Real Gone was one of my favorite TW records, and I barely listen to it now because I have to go to YouTube to do so.

Yeah, that remix is a travesty. I'm still a CD guy so I always have my original close at hand, but the fact that that crappy sanitized remix has become the canonical version of that album on most mainstream platforms is really unfortunate. "Day After Tomorrow" isn't the worst offender by any stretch but a lot of the grainier, more abrasive tracks have really been scrubbed clean. Really bad.

The official Tom Waits Facebook page will sometimes tease "big news coming soon!" and then it'll turn out to be some tribute album or that he's donating a signed fedora to some charity auction. I wonder if we'll ever get a new album
