My fiancée gets that from time to time. I guess it's not uncommon. Hers is due to stress on the spine.

Think the bike is fucking with my back, it's been sore for weeks :(
Have you tried those lumbar extension machines where you lean back against a padded arm that raises weights? I remember seeing an interview with Tim Duncan where he swore by them for keeping his back healthy.
Nah not yet, i'll look into it. The worst thing is no matter how much I change up my routine, or rest, or ice it, or heat it, or take drugs, it's still sore!

Upper and/or lower back? What kind of pain (i.e. sharp pinching, dull aching, etc)? And is it just in the spine, or across the back?

Just lower back/upper gluts, across the lower back. More like a dull ache, not constant moreso when I move in certain ways.

Were you running a lot of hills? I have tight achilles and calves and my feet go numb if I'm running a lot of hills. They come back to normal once I have a flat stretch though.
actually, yes. i was running in the park. come to think of it, my left achilles was feeling a bit off all morning and my right calf is always tight.

i'm trying to run several times a week, but when this numbing happens it messes up my runs. i mean, i could keep running but there's something about not being able to feel my feet hitting the ground that scares me.

Did pretty good this morning. Hit the weights followed by 15 minutes on the treadmill at 4.5 mph. Not that big of a deal but damn did I realize how much I've slacked off on cardio the last month or so. Afterwards I went back to do some more upper body but my arms/chest were still beat from earlier. I guess that's not a bad thing though.

I did good tonight, hour of weights followed by 20 minutes on the treadmill. I needed that.

Keep up the good work Biff. You're going to look so hot soon, that you'll have to change your name to Buff. :naughty:

10 miles in 69 minutes

I was enjoying my summer hibernation, but I've been itching for a run. Despite my inactivity, I've managed to lose more weight and I felt superlight on my feet. Hit the turnaround in 33 minutes and I had visions of finishing in 65, but the heat (it was 100 plus) bit me in the ass and I pretty much died in the last 2 miles. Still, a sub-70 after 10 days off isn't bad.

Thanks Sarge but I realized years ago I was never going to be one of those buff guys. I've got a small body frame and while I hated it as a teen/early 20something I'm much more comfortable with it now as a I see formerly in-shape friends gain mass while losing definition. For me it's more about trying to get and maintain tone. Weights help but the cardio is key for me. When I slack off with that my belly goes quick. I've tried to get into running/jogging but it's never clicked for me. I do love that sweaty, shaky post-workout feeling though.
Did good this morning, similiar routine to Thursday evening.

finished 10th at a small local 5k with a 20 min time. I was first in my 25-29 age group. Man, I'm gonna miss this age bracket. People my age don't try that hard. The 30's are when most people realize they are fat and out of shape from their post college 20's and get back into to good running condition.

Yup. The 30 to 39 age group is the most competitive in most races. I'm happy to be 40.

Also, nice work!

It's not uncommon. In many of the 5/10 K runs I've done, a lot of the teenagers finish with great times - and half of them don't even train. It's mainly down to a greta VO2 max, which is something that is usually naturally high in youth/adolescents, but then decreases slowly with age (faster if someone doesn't exercise much through their 20's/30's).

Also, at that age their joints/bones/muscles are still in peak form and haven't started to wear from years of use/training/etc.

You must run in some huge/elite races. This kid already has colleges looking at him. Apparently he's already run a sub-15:30 several times. Around 14 puts you in Olympic team qualifying territory. State high school titles are won at ~16. I would doubt any teenager finishing in 17 or so did it "just off the street".

Also, I'm not sure it's that youngsters have a "naturally" greater VO2 max, but that their bodies respond well to interval training that then boosts their VO2 max. That's why many elite high school track and cross country teams are churning out "interval junkies", which, in my opinion, is doing them a disservice by short-changing their aerobic development.

I did pretty good tonight after a two day break. Cut my weight routine back a little but knocked up the kilos a bit to balance out. I really felt the difference in my arms and to a less degree my chest/back. Followed that up with a mile and third on the treadmill.
Do it again tomorrow!

Anyone done a triathlon and have any tips? I'm doing my first one on Sunday. Woefully undertrained unless copious quantities of Jack Daniels and red wine counts as training. Hell, I don't even know about race logistics. Do they provide a place to change from your swim shorts to biking/running gear? Or do you just strip down by your bike? I've not practiced the transitions, anything I should look out for?

my buddy runs them. i know swimming he does approx 50-60 laps in the pool 3 or 4 days a week ( 1 lap =50m) and he probably bikes about 150 miles a week and runs another 20 miles a week.

shits too intense for me
