He is responsible for the New 52 reality. He noticed that reality would occasionally shift (from various crisis events over the years) but it would always snap back and center around Superman (the Earth Prime Universe one specifically) and his inert "goodness". Manhattan wanted to know why. So he made changes. He removed the JSA and Legion Of Superheroes. Two key parts of Superman's development. The New 52 Superman was still be heroic but more detached. The universe was less hopeful. More dark. Manhattan then realized that reality was in some way sentient and didn't like the change in Superman and what it meant for the metaverse and is pushing back.

Cool. I like his own views about him being the villain.

I wonder when DC got cool feet about his new 52 reboot and put Manhattan in the story.

Seeds started a couple years ago when they did the Rebirth thing and brought pre Flashpoint Lois and Superman back.

or I guess the Metaverse brought them back.

Yeah, but rebirth was DC already planning to erase the new52. I wonder if manhattan being a part on the new52 was their plan from the get go or they hated the new52 and needed to once again, do a reboot.

He was more or less assassinated, not killed heroically. I guess they didn't want to give a baddie "their" moment.

Not asleep but not fighting per se.
Far from heroic, it really rung that almost too tired bell of people just suck.
