I hear it more in the first song than Santa Monica, which sounds nothing like the Hold Steady to me. Anyway, the correct response is that they sound like Bruce Springsteen. Or someone else credible and awesome. Hipsters who laud the HS want nothing to do with Everclear. Personally, I really love this song (which sounds nothing like the HS):

Me too. I was way into The Hold Steady for a while but have kind of soured on them. Still enjoy the records I liked back then, just can't get into the new stuff. I like that so many of their songs are still literally just reminiscing about hardcore though.
