Adrenaline. Knowing what will Happen if they don't escape. Knowing all his 'friends' would have hit the showers while he didn't he'd gone to spring Poe out.

Yeah killing innocent people for a "job" and killing people to save the universe seem to be on different levels. If anything, I think it's a key indicator of his growth and development. Willing to fight when he has something to fight for, something he believes in.

True. He hasn't decided to fight the first order at this point. He merely wants to escape. Remember he still wants to keep running by the time they get to Maz's. So it's a burning sense of self preservation more than anything.

There's very little nuance to his performance until the final third. He's at a 10 for so long it becomes tiring.
