LTRP might be...

it could go either way. it's so cheesy, but musically i could see Mike & Stone ripping it up enough to forgive Ed's vocal melody.
They dropped the ball on that chorus man. I bet it was either eddie or Bo'B. Could have gone fun or dancey with some edge and some swagger like the rest of the song but nooo...

MYM is better then everything except getaway.

I've pretty much had the same reaction to this I had the S/T leak. No song that I loved to death on the first listen (although I did feel that way with WWS), but I keep feeling compelled to listen and liking it more and more the more I discover--especially as the lyrics start to crystallize.

I think I took to Backspacer quicker.

YUP.

Getaway is their most Kiss sounding tune too

Dangerous territory. I'm not assuming anything's changing about these except for the quality.

I for sure like it better than LTRP. Probably like it better than LB but the studio cut did tickle me better than wrigley.

shockingly i like Lightning Bolt more than MYM. i was SO bored with that song at Wrigley. the chorus lyrics are still super cheesy, but musically it's pretty aces.

I probably do. But it's too early to tell. I also really liked MYM a lot.

2 listens in. I'm on the fence. I do like parts of the songs alot, but then I just feel unsure. I think there's that part of me that's just expecting to be vaulted back to at least 1998 or earlier, but I have to realize it's just not going to happen. They're older and that's that. I'll enjoy this album I have no doubt, but at this very moment I think I have to adjust my expectations. I'm also confident the rest of the album will have at least a couple of better songs.

The song swallowed whole clearly is a leftover from ITW. it's 100% an ed song that's made a transition into a band song 100% successfully. Gives me hope for SBM.

Yea, i like that Stone and Mike are actually adding a bit to the song instead of just hammering away

I´m sorry but I´m a little frustrated about this when you compare it to the live version, where´s the guitars in this? Lightning Bolt lacks the balls.

The fadeouts are bad and they happen too quickly, especially if you listen carefully. The cut-off points are too abrupt.

Just a question though: you mention that the interesting things begin to happen, but then swiftly change back to standard PJ, so there's not enough time given to the original parts. Do you not feel like that about a lot of PJ? They're always keen to remind us they're just a rock band, even in their most interesting songs, imo.
That's a good point. I think it's a lot worse these days though because Pearl Jam has become a bit of a caricature of its former self, making the more standard parts of the songs even more bland.

And I didn't say parts were that original, just interesting. Let The Records Play for a few seconds sounds like it's going to be a really cool, sideways, crunchy number right up until the point Ed opens his mouth. Not that Ed is the only problem, but that's the moment the song starts to suck.
OK, thanks for the clarification. So it's more of an all-encompassing reaction to the general pop direction, where they're doing 'PJ things' but aren't pushing them as far beyond 'enjoyable' as they used to.

what I like about crappy leaks is that you get to learn the songs, and then when you finally hear them clearly and cleanly it's like discovering them again.

I think that Lightning Bolt would have better reception if it wasn't previewed at Wrigley

If you listen to the guitar work and the other stuff going on, its way more interesting (to me) than anything on Backspacer, and I was a fan of that album.

After 10 or 11 listens, this is how I rank them:

Getaway
Swallowed Whole(!)

Lightning Bolt

Let The Records Play

LTRP is a nice and fun song, but I still don't see them fit in with the rest...

I'd like to hear more, but I really like the feel of what's there.

Lightning Bolt is certainly the most backspacer sounding of all these songs.
