The fadeouts are bad and they happen too quickly, especially if you listen carefully. The cut-off points are too abrupt.

Just a question though: you mention that the interesting things begin to happen, but then swiftly change back to standard PJ, so there's not enough time given to the original parts. Do you not feel like that about a lot of PJ? They're always keen to remind us they're just a rock band, even in their most interesting songs, imo.
That's a good point. I think it's a lot worse these days though because Pearl Jam has become a bit of a caricature of its former self, making the more standard parts of the songs even more bland.

And I didn't say parts were that original, just interesting. Let The Records Play for a few seconds sounds like it's going to be a really cool, sideways, crunchy number right up until the point Ed opens his mouth. Not that Ed is the only problem, but that's the moment the song starts to suck.
OK, thanks for the clarification. So it's more of an all-encompassing reaction to the general pop direction, where they're doing 'PJ things' but aren't pushing them as far beyond 'enjoyable' as they used to.
Pretty much.

Are there already lyrics for Getaway?

I very pleased about the overall dynamics of the songs and rhythms. The songs move around and have some of that "groove" back.

Swallowed Whole @ 1:17-1:44, great. It gets there again later, too, I think. And other parts of it are pretty, but that first pick-up early in the song is where it peaks for me. The solo is excellent, too, though.

LTRP might be...

it could go either way. it's so cheesy, but musically i could see Mike & Stone ripping it up enough to forgive Ed's vocal melody.
They dropped the ball on that chorus man. I bet it was either eddie or Bo'B. Could have gone fun or dancey with some edge and some swagger like the rest of the song but nooo...

MYM is better then everything except getaway.
shockingly i like Lightning Bolt more than MYM. i was SO bored with that song at Wrigley. the chorus lyrics are still super cheesy, but musically it's pretty aces.
To be honest MYM isn't really my kind of song either i dislike that bridge/chorus whatever it is quite a bit. But LB is basically Unthought known/ amongst the waves on roids. Which is awesome for the people that like those songs but definitly not for me. All i hear is cheese and faux uplifting music, and how many songs is ed gonna write with that dum dum dum dum palm muted riff under the verses.

See i already knew i disliked this song but its still getting under my skin. Grr arrgh.

Strangely, although I prefer MYM to all of these as a song, I think all of these are better performances.

Jesus Christ I'm looking forward to Infallible based on these, though. Expectations are through the roof for that one.

After two or three albums where I wasnt hearing many new things vocally from Ed, at least a couple of these songs (Inc MYM), have some neat things going on. Color me excited.

I think it was a bold move to put a song like Getaway at the start of the album. That kind of song would've been in Unemployable's place on other albums. But it's a great opener.

I keep getting emails and getting excited that it's going to tell me I have a message from rm forum about a link that I'm not allowed to ask for . So far not so good, I can save 20% at Kohls, I could get hired as a mystery shopper, and my kids can earn free tokens at chuckecheese.com. If anyone would like a link to these emails just pm me and I'll send it.

To be fair, you're worried about Ed repeating the da-da-da-da rhythm on the guitar because guitar is what you listen to, primarily. How do you think I feel when I listen to punk and for every song, the drummer goes boom-cha! boom-cha! boom-cha! boom-cha! really fast?

that opening to Getaway reminds me of a more straightforward take on the Unemployable riff.
