Fellowship is a great introduction into the world and well paced. Two Tower is really cool, if overlong, but has some of the best character moments in the entire trilogy and is probably still underrated. The last one is a disaster.

Excalibur is a delicious, surreal mess. The Lord of the Ribgs is Anglophilic bombast at its most digestible. Not only do they not really match up well enough to be pitted against one another, but they're both more carefully crafted than nearly everything that gets released these days.

The books are a slog. Great fodder for better storytellers though. While there was never technically really a Middle Earth EU until the movies, almost everything in the genre owes something to the world building

Don't know if I'm reading that right but middle earth has possibly the greatest and most detailed EU in all fiction Stip. he wrote mountains of stuff that was posthumously edited and published by his son.

I meant having other authors expand the universe. Tolkien had an incredible talent for world building, but probably you'd see better work giving someone else keys to the sandbox.

Yeah he's an odd fish. Such a grand sweeping well constructed world with huge themes then he'll spend a page describing the flowers on a hill in a forest.

It's a love or hate thing but I do think everyone should at least try read LOTR.
If you break it down each chapter is only ten pages so it's not as daunting when you approach it like that.

For sure. Which is a large part of why I still talk about those books with respect even though I don't especially care for them.
