This is kind of where I stand, too. I don't have the same vested interest as a fan, obviously, but I don't think the fanbase's inability to recognize a player's greatness should count as a strike against him.

It's kind of like saying the right players are always chosen for the All Star game because the fans are the ones who make players "stars" and they do the voting.

I'm not even saying it should be entirely about stats. That would be dumb. But you would think there should be some point at which the player's achievements overshadow subjective opinions, and I think Boggs is well beyond that point.

I wouldn't want my team to retire numbers like thr Yankees either (or the Habs... ugh!), but I don't think Boggs is a step in that direction.

meh. Retiring numbers is basically fan service anyways. If the fans don't want it, what's it really matter?

I just think the guy who hit the ball at a higher rate than anyone else at Fenway Park should have his number up there in right field at Fenway Park.

My dad once got Sox tickets from work, and he took my brother instead of me (it was his first game) (I guess it's fair, he was the older brother); it was the game where Boggs got his 2000th hit.

Can anyone remember the last time the subject of the Red Sox beat writers' ire wasnt a latino player? The last one I can remember was maybe Clemens in like 95.

I don't see what the big deal is with Sandoval, it isn't like he's ever been "in shape".

It's fucking racist, I'm sorry. I've had it with them picking a Hispanic punching bag every year.
