Re: Lightning Bolt - October 15
initial reaction:
Generally: Its a more effective Backspacer. Its more vibrant and layered. It is deeper. Still, it is just more of this weird, late 80s/early 90s cheeseball AC rock, which is something I have no interest in, especially from this band.
Getaway: I like this one but its hard to say why. Its urgent and energetic. Cool little groove. Its just well made.
Let The Records Play: hits and misses. I like the Black Keys ripoff bits (i know i know, The Black Keys never had an original thought, but you know what I mean), but it quickly settles into that sitcom sound they are inexplicably interested in now.
Lightning Bolt and Swallowed Whole: Left little impression on me. I don't hate either of them, but, again, they are not something I would ever listen to if they were from another band.

Re: Lightning Bolt - October 15
Ok, listened to these a few times. Quick Takes...
Getaway: Best song on the sampler and one of their better openers. Ed sounds so good here and Jeff is bringing it. The part where all the instruments drop out except the drums in combo with the "lizards" line brings a smile to my face each time.
Lightning Bolt: Much better than the live version. Each listen reveals a part I've missed the times before. The chorus is catchy but pretty weak. It's a solid track accomplishing what Unthought Known wanted to do.
Let The Records Play: Like the idea, but the execution is inconsistent. Good solo but the vocals don't do it for me. Has growth potential.
Swallowed Whole: The lyrics are terrible as well as the delivery in the first verse. The build is good and it works musically, but I cannot get past the hippie lyrics.
Overall, these tunes have much more depth than most of Backspacer.

Am I the only one who thinks the opening to Getaway sounds like Jesse's Girl? I really like the song, but the first couple of barres made me think of this song.

Really enjoying Getaway and, LTRP is by far their best attempt at a "fun" song in recent memory. Lightning Bolt is much better than the Wrigley version, and Swallowed Whole seems like it will grow on me. Considering the fact that Infallible, Sirens, and Yellow Moon might be better than all of these has me thinking this record has some real potential - even if SBM and Future Days suck. This is exciting.
BTW, Hi everyone. And thanks to whoever made these songs available.

Jessie's Girl could perfectly describe how most of their recent music sounds to me. Thanks for that.guitar_davey wrote:Am I the only one who thinks the opening to Getaway sounds like Jesse's Girl? I really like the song, but the first couple of barres made me think of this song.

I just heard these a couple of times today. There is an implied urgency in all 4. I seem to remember that word being used a lot about Backspacer also, but this is different.
Leaves me wondering are these the high energy points of the record and is the rest all dark and moody?
Think I'd be ok with that. It's all going to come down to sequencing if this turns out to Be the case

Re: Lightning Bolt - October 15
from what we've heard the rest of the album isn't going to sound like these songs (well, future days and sleeping by myself might fit in) so I wonder how they will all fit together.dimejinky99 wrote:I just heard these a couple of times today. Jessies Girl always reminds me of that scene in Boogie Nights where they try to rob that dude and end up getting shot at...its playing in the background...sorry to stray off topic...BurtReynolds wrote:Jessie's Girl could perfectly describe how most of their recent music sounds to me.
