It was a building bombed in Gaza the day before the parking lot event, so not random but clearly intentionally misleading. You can only see the top line there, but there is a small caption on the full image indicating it came from somewhere else.

Random was a poor word choice. But of course, they used that image very consciously.

Maybe it was too charitable to assume the NYT was incompetent. Seems like the issue is their staff is rather biased.
