I wonder if they'll do a Greatest Hits 2004-2014.

I'd assume that, if anything, they'd be more likely to do like most long-lived bands and just do yet another full-career retrospect hits record (this time a little more concise, dropping some minor early successes to make room for bigger late-era hits). But I'd be a little curious to see how a 04-14 hits record would sell....some of these songs got more play than almost anything else they've ever done besides Daughter and Betterman, but is that initial impact translating into a lasting memory?

some of those songs went nowhere, but with another album that produces 2-3 solid singles they'd really have some strong chart representation.

I suspect you're probably right about the longevity though. No one remembers brother.

So I revisited this song because it's #3 on the iTunes Rock chart, and I figured I was missing something that others heard. The conclusion is that, musically, I'm not. But I did form this little idea.

There was a particular line that stuck out to me that I never really paid attention to during other listens, so it got me reading the rest of the lyrics to the song. The song is blatantly about his close loved ones, but he never really outright says who those loved ones are (aside from the "Angel" nickname, which makes you assume it's directed towards his wife). But the part that struck me was the line:

All the missing crooked hearts
They may die but in us they live on

This line has to be about Dennis Flemion ("three crooked hearts").

With that in mind, one could interpret Future Days as an ode to people Ed has loved and admired in his life that have had profound influence on him and have passed on. The "you" in "days of you and me" being the plural tense of the word. Ed is looking forward to being reunited with his past friends and loved ones in some sort of afterlife. His wife, kids, Johnny Ramone, Dennis Flemion, Neil Young.... whoever. Not unlike the same sentiment in Man Of The Hour's "goodbye for now" line.

All of that might already be pretty obvious, but seems to make the song a little more interesting than thinking of it as some douche canoe song about his wife.

I knew Dennis and he was an amazing person. It was like being friends with Lenny Bruce or George Carlin or something...he was beyond funny and just brilliant...and larger than life. When you lose somebody like that, it's especially tragic.

Ok, but the chart placing was brought in to rebuke bodysnatcher's comments about making a "bad song less bad." I'm not sure how it getting to #3 on that chart has any bearing on how good or bad the song is.

God that's a horrible set of songs. It seems worse when they are all together.

It's either this or his kids. It's not about his wife. Or maybe it's about all of these people and all of those unnamed like you mentioned.

It's just so damn hard to care after suffering through listening to it...

Yeah, that's a pretty woeful lineup. I'd be interested in another Lost Dogs. Even if it wasn't close to being as good as the first one, it would be interesting to hear what got left in the vaults.
