Seriously, the CONSTANT comparisons to Backspacer are quite annoying. This has been happening for HUNDREDS of pages before we ever heard anything.

I get it, it's cool to SH*T on Backspacer and anything that might sound catchy. You're in the popular group.

I'm here because I love Pearl Jam. I don't love every song, but I don't look for the chance to sh*t on everything either.

The guitar in LTRP reminds me a little if Otis taylors ten million slaves, a little. The bass reminds me of this band of skulls song who's name I can't recall.

The guitar tone and the riff in the verses sounds like it's in the same vein as Howlin' For You or a song like that. The entire song doesn't sound like Black Keys, but that main riff definitely evokes the same kind of feel.

Absolutely, but production-wise, tone wise, and in terms of "current" rock music, BK is the obvious comparison.

Haven't heard them yet, but it's interesting that, according to Mike, don't all of these songs come from the second recording session they did? I seem to remember these songs (or at least most of them) being singled out on that interview he did.

I've never really viewed the band as "grunge rock". They've always sounded closer to a classic rock band to me.

I've seen them as classic rock, but with contemporary hard rock and experimental flourishes to make them a bit 'cooler'. But the 'cool' flourishes are going and they're courting a wider appeal is all I'm saying. I'm fine with that if I still like the song.

The music I'm thinking of is difficult for me to put a label or time on (i'm sure others could describe it better). It trickled out over the 80s and 90s and maybe in the late 70s as well, but don't really match the stereotype of those decades (mostly because they were so forgettable). It has a lot of faces, but its mostly bland mid tempo guitar rock. MOR or adult contemporary I guess you would call it. Anyway its not what I'd call vital listening, and I don't get why they seem to be so into it now.

Of course, Lightning Bolt sounds like solo Pete Townshend....that doesn't mean it's remotely as good as All the Best Cowboys. So there's that.

Well, most Pearl Jam fans ARE now in the target demographic age group for that schlock.

I almost feel like every successive album of Pearl Jam's has been a logical extension of the previous. They are constantly evolving, which is why I (and I think everyone here) love them. I'm excited!
