Went to a screening of Nineteen Eighty-Four last night at Alamo Draft House. I'd seen the film before but it's been 16 or 17 years. Mrs. D,T had never seen it, but she knows the book. It was fantastic to see it in this current political climate and with a room full of people on a big screen. Can we all agree that Roger Deakins is a goddamn master of his craft? Like, maybe the best ever? Christ!

Anyway, seeing the final act of the film with a packed house was a lot of fun. Big communal reactions to horrible things on screen are one of the reasons I used to love going to the movie theater. Shitty audiences kept me from that for far too long. I'm so glad Alamo Draft House exists and I'm able to have those experiences again.

Is an Alamo Drafthouse ticket considerably more expensive than a regular movie theater ticket?

I can't speak for other markets but the one in Brooklyn tends to be about the same or even cheaper. Tickets are $15 at ADH (unless it's a special screening or something, those can go up). Matinee's are about $11.

Yeah, it's not more any expensive than other theater chains.

Edge of Seventeen. It was okay but I was expecting it to be better since I had heard good things.

Sleepless - pretty much a waste of time

Only three hours until I'm curled up in a dark theater watching a 4K restoration of Eraserhead.

I watched The Founder and was pretty into it. I'm always intrigued by stories of charismatic con men, and the Ray Croc of this movie certainly fits that bill. Lots of the staging, shooting, and stuff was pretty standard fare, but that didn't really hurt my enjoyment. 7.567 / 10.000

For sure. It doesn't get as cerebral or intense as, say, PTA's movies about the same exact thing, but it was still enjoyable. I am a huge Keaton fan, too.

Eraserhead.

Just... wow. It's complete quintessential David Lynch and at the same time it's completely different from anything that followed. It's a harsh assault on the sense. The images are gorgeous albeit mind-bending and at times horrific. There is that trademark sense of stumbling into a dream/nightmare that Lynch loves to play with but there are some really overt grizzly moments, too. He doesn't do that very often. And the effects! Holy shit! The puppetry and the gore... the sounds. The fucking sounds in this movie.

There's a lot to digest. And I have to say my initial thought is that it's a necessary but perhaps minor Lynch film overall; it's probably in the middle, toward the bottom of my rankings after one screening and very little time to digest it. But I'm so glad I finally saw it. I'm glad I saw it on the big screen in a 4K restoration overseen by Lynch himself. It's a singular cinematic event. How many other film makers in the late 70's were making movies like this? I'm not as up on my American film history as I should be. But at a time with Annie Hall and Star Wars were all over the place, it makes Eraserhead feel even more profound and special.

I love how Lynch is able to earn very real, emotionally honest laughs in the middle of all the insanity and sensory overload. The man is a fucking genius. And there's real heart to this! Fuck, he's good. Yeah, I really enjoyed it.
