I think Hader was top notch in this episode.

i mean it had its moments, but overall the whole barry-gene stuff is not funny and feels desperate. The ending of the episode too.

Well, that got interesting again. It hasn’t been a light start to the season but it’s about to get even darker. That panther story was most likely foreshadowing.
Once again Fuchs is shown looking devilish, in red light to end the episode. He obviously didn’t pick up on the story’s moral. That phone scene with him and Barry was fantastic.
I’m curious where the Cousineau plot line goes. Barry so wants him to be a mentor figure, a replacement of Fuchs. Another mention of Cousineau being a jerk and having a bit of temper in the past.
The junket scene was a nice little bit of Hollywood in joke; how boring and tedious those press interviews are. Sally’s co-star again mentions how uncomfortable she is around Barry.
Apparently this episode had lots of reworking and reshoots.

The only thing I could see making some sort of sense is Gene gets into a pickle — does something really awful — and Barry saved him somehow. Then they have a bond forged in villainy.
They're going to great lengths to have a bunch of casting directors say that Gene is a scumbag, when we've spent the past two seasons seeing only how adored he is by his students. $100 says he gets #MeTood for some past impropriety, and Barry offs the accuser.
Haven't seen tonight's episode yet, but they've also gone to great lengths to show that Gene's students are a bunch of absolute loser moronsz generally fresh from Kansas or whatever, who are routinely getting scammed by Gene (ie today's class is cancelled but no refunds), taking a class in Gene's theater decorated with posters of Gene. So it kinda already scans that Gene is a bit of a scumbag

I’m also underwhelmed by this show now. At least Gene seems to have snapped out of his funk; no more close up shots of Winkler staring blankly please.

tragabigzanda wrote:The biggest problem is how totally oblivious Barry seems to be:
1. Doesn’t realize he looks like a monster after screaming at his gf on set
2. Doesn’t realize his whole plan with Gene is bound to fail
3. Doesn’t see the irony in the line reading with Gene, nor sense Gene’s discomfort
4. Doesn’t seem to think Fuches is a problem anymore
It’s like he became a moron during Covid. It just doesn’t track.
agree with all of this. Barry is basically a machine, and he doesn't know how to be anything more than that.
