Identity politics (or at least, the narrow definition of it used by conservatives), is also increasingly no longer the cudgel that they seem to think, something that's only likely to grow as the country's demographics continue to change. It's completely predictable that a party with diverse, multi-ethnic coalition is going to find itself having to navigate issues about its own values on race and ethnicity in the way a mono-racial party will not. Republicans are right that their party will not have to go through these kinds of thing, though identity politics is just as prevalent, if not more so, on their side. It's just that their party is increasingly monoracial, which means all its invective is spewed outward. Which leads, inevitably, to things like today's tweets.
Of course Democrats are going to be having these kinds of arguments, and not Republicans; does anyone believe the diversity is there in the latter party to even make such a discussion sensible?
Great post. The idea the identity politics only exists on the left has never made any sense at all.

No one is making that point. What I believe we see uniquely on the progressive side today is the open use of identity to bully and silence dissent. "we dont need black faces who aren't black voices"... what else could that mean?

Maybe it means exactly the thing described in the post you quoted.

No doubt that there is a faction on the left that does this sort of thing. And I didn't mean to imply that people here were denying that identity politics exists on the right. In general though, it does seem associated more with the left than the right despite the fact that it's a huge deal on the right. You can't watch or listen to most conservative media anymore without hearing what seems to be a persecution complex. Trump himself appeals first & foremost to identity, as the GOP has become a party that literally has a majority with one sub-group - white men. Digster's post resonates with me because he is suggesting that one side struggles with this internally, while the other doesn't have that struggle, but is rather an identity on its own resisting all others. I think that's right. Both versions may irritate people, but at least one side is having the conversation. The other seems unaware of the fact that they're engaging in identity politics at all, which is strange.

Makes sense. I wonder though, is red team identity politics driven the same way... is it that the policies are focused on white identity issues or that the republicans are so homogeneous at this point that it's invisible to them? The goal of "equality", however you want to define that term, seems less important to them.

23 hours now.
Some folks speaking up, now. Mitt Romney’s deflection was on-brand hilarious for its cowardice though.

It really doesn't. I agree. It's super forced. Which is why I posted it. It's more "on brand" that way.

The only proper response to demands for condemnation is "fuck you I won't do what you tell me", btw.
This is context independent.
