Is it better than the 2nd half of S/T? Perhaps.
Is it a 4+ star song that can hold a candle to Nothingman, Present Tense or Immortality? No chance.
It's nothing like any of those songs stylistically. It's a blend of reggae/jazz/rock that seems pretty unique to PJ's catalog.
Every song doesn't have to build, rise , crash or carry through it a catchy vocal melody.
As some of us discussed last night, it feels like an intimate storytelling in some smoky club/bar at 2am. It is legitimately a 4 star song for me being new or not.

after lots of listens this is top tier for me much better than I thought at first. This is their best work as band playing together this is amazing. It is like a little U2 a little Floyd and a little Marvin Gay. This is complete to me I wouldnt change anything.

Made a song I love anyways, even more resonant for all sorts of reasons.

Next time my hairdresser is being too scissor-happy, I'm going to say "Watch it there fella, you're thumbin' your way to a buzzcut."

Yeah the writing is finished. I've said it before but I think the vocal takes would have been redone if going to mastering.
Toward the end of the sessions it came down to Vedder to finish up the material, with Ament observing that "the way the record started and the way that it finished is probably two different things."
I imagine the initial recordings sounded a lot like this - remember this was from the first of three recording sessions.

Fantastic song. Why'd it take so long? I could have used a song like this a few times in my life recently.

I'd like to hear them go in this direction more. I understand wanting to go in a different direction with Backspacer, which was a nice break, but I think this would be better. I've always wanted to hear them do more non-rock stuff.

Oh wouldn't it be great if they committed to this direction for an album. And did small intimate shows.

I love this song more and more everytime I listen to it. In the beginning Eds voice sounded strange to me, but now it fits perfectly to the mood of the song. It's kinda dystopian for me... I picture burnt earth and grey dust & fog everywhere. hahaha.
