And so we have the beginnings of their explorations of 'patterns' in Backspacer!Lounge Lizard wrote:Appears I havent been listening to it correctly. Checked it out in my headphones and suddenly what was basically a wall of rythmic noise from the two minute mark turned out to be something more layered and complex. I especially like Stones part where instead of hitting all of the strings he picks them in a nice upwards pattern.

No, I was being sarcastic. Around the time of Backspacer, Mike did interviews in which he said that Brendan O'Brien was trying to get him to think in terms of "patterns" rather than riffs or solos. To this day, no one knows what he was talking about, but it was probably to do with being boring and uninspired rather than interesting.Lounge Lizard wrote:Oh ok i get it. Riff instead of pattern, i meant riff.
I think it was Ed talking about Mike's playing, not Mike talking about O'Brien's direction.harmless wrote:No, I was being sarcastic. Oh, really? I thought it was something to do with the approach but yeah, thinking about it you're right. I probably just inserted that extra stuff in because that's how I rationalised it to myself.theplatypus wrote:I think it was Ed talking about Mike's playing, not Mike talking about O'Brien's direction.harmless wrote:No, I was being sarcastic. Yes, yes, i got what you meant. Only I think it was Ed who said Mike doesnt really play solos but nice little patterns now. Since then the word pattern became a curseharmless wrote:No, I was being sarcastic.
