It's ultimately a question of cynicism. Do you think the majority of people are selfish? I would say that they are, especially when their own survival is on the line. For that reason, voting blue would be suicide.

Because they are more interested in moral grandstanding than actually saving people. If they were interested in saving people, they would tell them to vote red. But OH NO that would be selfish! And selfishness is a sin.
