I heard the actors and director's contracts are coming up soon. If the writer's strike drags on, it could be hugely destructive when all 3 go on strike at the same time.

Flash might've been worse off because Michael Keaton and Sasha Calle and Ben Affleck would've had to spend weeks avoiding awkward questions about Ezra Miller, a person they shouldn't have to answer for

Not necessarily. Late night talk shows provide a comfy refuge from awkward questions and are pretty good at getting the word out about new releases. But of course, they're off the air right now.

With a SAG-AFTRA strike authorization in place should talks go sideways, and actors not permitted to do press in those situations, the studios, streamers, etc. may want to think twice before playing notorious hardball, as this is what happens when your cast isn’t available to promote a major motion picture.

Already, San Diego Comic-Con is in check with the unavailability of TV series creators. Warners didn’t lean on Miller for The Flash‘s press tour, the star making his first Hollywood appearance post-legal troubles at the Monday night premiere of The Flash, which was limited to a red carpet photocall (not video or press interviews, except a couple of bloggers). But a majority of the cast weren’t available for 360-degrees press, we hear.

Know that late night shows going dark during the WGA Strike also compounded Warner’s woes here. While Keaton showed up at screenings for a Q&A in London and Paris, and tubthumped the movie on social, he was busy shooting Beetlejuice 2 for Warner Bros. Sasha Calle, who plays Supergirl, did do press down in Miami and Texas. Where was Ben Affleck? Late night TV provides a fun, not to mention a controlled environment, where talent can sidestep any sticky conversations. The reason why many didn’t sit down with a bulk of press is so that they didn’t have to be on the hook for fielding uncomfortable questions about the leading star of the film, Miller. The Flash also didn’t have a $80M-$100M-plus promotional partner campaign like most of these tentpoles do (that said, they had some partners, i.e. Puma with its Flash sneakers), which is essential when it comes to cutting through the noise of summer and opening a movie to big numbers.

I think it's mostly superhero fatigue, though the Spider-Man franchise is somewhat immune.

I think its bigger than superhero fatigue. Its spectacle fatigue. Consumers are over spending on bad stories with a 3rd act of bad CGI. They'll just wait for it to be on streaming unless word of mouth is amazing. Like Top Gun or GOTG 3 to a much lesser degree. You need a hook....something familiar but also sorta new. Like Mario. Barbie might be similar. Familiar but new. Very curious if Cruise is immune with the next Mission. I know I wanna see it. Disney's entire model needs to be re-thought.

Mission Impossible is definitely different because Cruise and that series in particular is famous for "doing their own stunts" and basically only using cgi to edit out safety cables. Not to create entire backgrounds, physical spaces, characters, and movements.

MI is going to make big money

It’s probably all of that and more, like the lead actor being a creep or these comic book universes getting a little too complex to hold some viewers’ interest. There’s a reason comic books have always been niche.

Hyping up a brand new creative direction for DC before releasing the final movie of the previous era might not have been a great idea.

Aquaman came out 5 years ago. Feels like 50 years ago. I feel like that one is gonna bomb, too.

Why did Elemental bomb? For some reason people started hating on that one early on.
