tragabigzanda wrote:New album is predictably amazing. It's really tight, songs are all short and punchy, and they're having a lot of fun with grooves on this one; there's nothing as sparse and plodding as "Didn't We Deserve a Look at You the Way You Really Are." Kind of a cross between At Action Park and Dude Incredible.

Final song is called "I Don't Fear Hell" and Steve sings "When this is over I'll leap in my grave like the arms of a lover. If there's a Heaven I hope they're having fun because if there's a Hell I'm gonna know everyone."

Wtf.
Damn, he is telling everyone he was a pedo

Betty is their best but Meantime isn't far off.

Betty sounds great to my ears. Street Crab, Milquetoast, Wilma's Rainbow...all are crisp with powerful bottom end, really precise performances and captures where each instrument has its own space.

I think Stanier has been inactive for 3-4 years.

battles is not done, they toured with bungle last year, but yeah, i too wish stanier would be more prolific, he's an underrated drummer. what he brings to helmet and tomahawk is amazing.

Accordingly to Wikipedia, he is still nominally the drummer in the Mark of Cain, though he hasn't played with them in several years.

Unsurprisingly, there's a number of Albini fans on the Godspeed You! Black Emperor Discord, and there's one guy who moonlights as a record store clerk. He got a copy of the new Shellac early and sent me a rip of it. I definitely hear a lot of what Trag's saying, though I'm not familiar with all Shellac's material. I've only listened twice so far, but I've picked up on a number of references to death, most overtly in the final track. I'm sure it's coincidence and probably something that was on Steve's mind from time to time, having been in his early 60s, but it's also a little eerie given circumstances.

tragabigzanda wrote:BTW jammer, I listened to all three of those albums we mentioned. The vocals will probably keep my away from revisiting Neurosis and HoF, but that Helmet album rules. I’ve spent a good amount of time with Betty, but only had a passing familiarity with Meantime. It’s amazing. Need to put the LP on my wishlist.
Weren't you going to check out Chevelle as well? I get that Neurosis and High on Fire aren't for everyone, but they're some of the greatest at what they do. And yes John Stanier fucking rules and Helmet's "reunion" period has never really done anything at all for me. I saw them live in 2016 with Ministry and it was really cool though.

Stanier is an amazing drummer, glad to hear that he and Battles aren't over.

I saw Helmet last year and while they sounded good it was very much a nostalgia act sort of situation.

Stainer was on the Tomahawk record from 2021. That's not that long ago. Not sure what he's been up to since.
