Also, The Whole Love is a fantastic album worthy of Wilco's legacy.

This is the leakiest leak in all leakage.
It's been out there probably before he even recorded it. That leaky.
Blood great record though

To omit Mutations is a crying shame.

I streamed this on NPR this morning. Add me to the "love it" list.

Add "Mutations" to that list and I agree.

I really like this album. It's very enjoyable, very pretty, very relaxing stuff. But I've probably listened to it 10 or 20 times now and have yet to take from it much beyond that. Not a bad thing, but it's interesting.
Steven Hyden pretty much nailed it in his review, I think:
http://grantland.com/features/beck-phases-out/
On Benji’s closing track, “Ben’s My Friend,” Kozelek tells a story about buying $350 lampshades while in the midst of a quasi nervous breakdown. The song delves deep into neuroses stemming from Kozelek’s professional jealousies and artistic inadequacies. It draws you into personal territory that people generally try to avoid in their own hearts. (Also: It’s really funny.) Beck, meanwhile, just shows you some really nice lampshades.

I think that both songwriters have different voices in terms of their lyrics. Neither one is objectively better than the other.

Oh, definitely. I just liked that analogy. As much as I enjoy listening to this album, I feel like it's ultimately kind of shallow.

I am normally a big fan of Hyden's writing but that "which Beck is the real Beck?" business is beneath him, as if an artist who sometimes makes quirky, upbeat records and sometimes makes confessional, downtempo records is somehow being "fake" when indulging in one or the other. He's a Neil Young fan; he should know better.

As usual, I don't agree with something someone wrote on Grantland at all, but they sure sound good writing it.
That's a very interesting review, although I think his whole notion of 'who is the real Beck' is kind of an oversimplification of him as a musician. I also think Morning Phase, as a whole, sounds far more optimistic than Sea Change. Morning is a great example; it does sound like Golden Age, but trades that song's melancholy for something that, to me, sounds far more comforting and hopeful.
.......and Kevin Davis beat me to the punch. Agreed with that notion entirely, and Young was pretty much the person I had in mind as a forebear to Beck's work. Surely by now no one thinks that Young must at his heart choose between vulnerable folkie and eardrum-damaging rocker.
