Ok. Well let me enjoy my treasure find. I'm going to just look at them for a week or so then I'll start sending them about.

It's a pretty sweet find. In my suggestion, I think I assumed you already had the set.

So most of the series is on Youtube at this point, in varying levels of quality.

Watching Season 5 in my rewatch now. It's crazy how SE05EP04--"Bad Medicine"--is like a half season of The Wire in miniature; not surprisingly, the teleplay was written by David Simon. This is the second big Luther Mahoney episode, where he has another dealer killed because he's putting out an inferior product with the same package as Luther. You've got a junkie acting as an informant for the police, a narcotics cop comes over (first appearance of Stivers) to try and help homicide nail him, there's double-crosses and killed witnesses, a raid on a stash house, etc. It's almost like his first draft. Great stuff if you haven't revisited it in a while!

I also forgot how close together this Luther episode and Kellerman's being investigated for bribery are; it really ties together his rage and what eventually happens in the Luther story line.

Great show. Especially in the 90s I was so happy to watch this, and wondered why it never got more recognition.

In the 90s it happened with Babylon 5 vs Star Trek, and Homicide vs NYPD Blue.

Looks like it’ll be remastered for HD/4K, too. I know Simon had some issues with the way HBO remastered The Wire, so hopefully the filmmakers will be consulted for this.

Everyone has until September 1st to binge and then I want to have a discussion about how weird it was that the movie’s whole thing was that it changed who the main character of the show was and also how fucking unhinged Esposito’s performance in it is.

Just rewatched the premiere and, man, besides the fact that it’s filled with bangers (“Do you know what an autopsy is?” / “Yeah, they dig ‘em out like a canoe”), I still get that fucking rush at the end of the episode wanting to hit play on the next one. So fucking unreal.

I think the new remaster looks good, and I’m sure the later episodes will look better. The only thing is that some surfaces look funky—the one guy with the glasses in the box in close-up, I could either see the camera in his glasses (something they didn’t have to worry about on standard-def TVs) or there were just black splotches all over it from the transfer.

I recently learned that in some shots in the box, they set up a miniature version of the box in the adjoining room, because the mirror would have picked up the camera crew. I’m hoping to spot that at some point.
